If you're looking to keep your weight down while enjoying some quality yogurt or ice cream, your best bet is TCBY- with special mention of the one on Poplar Ave, as well as the one in Bartlett. The workers at the TCBY on Poplar are consistently polite and their desserts are delicious. If you want to shave off some of the calories you should observe the yogurt section. The Bartlett TCBY makes terrific parfaits for those interested- whereas the Poplar TCBY's specialty would be malts.
In North Memphis you'll come across a childhood favorite of mine called 'Sweden Kream'. Here you'll find some of the best soft serve ice cream you can find in Memphis, TN. The vanilla cones have this sweet, heavenly aftertaste that leaves you on air all day afterward. The great thing about this is that you don't have to overindulge in order to enjoy the unique flavor offered by Sweden Kream.
You can also great a hot dog or some nachos for those looking to double dessert with lunch or a snack. Those looking to lose weight can even opt for some equally tasty low-fat servings. As a final bow for the package, is the price- Sweden Kream is very inexpensive yet worth every penny and more!
Another of my favorite places to visit for dessert as a child was the Peanut Shop- a little place of business on Summer Ave. Famous for it's old fashioned layout, resident Mr. Peanut figurine, expansive inventory of hard to find candy, and dessert items! The Peanut Shop happens to share it's building with a Baskin Robbins, but it seems to consistently attract more customers than its conglomerate rival. What does that tell you?
True to its name, the Peanut Shop offers some of the best tasting peanuts you can find- roasted or plain! However the star of the show at the Peanut Shop is the dessert menu. On a hot summer day, nothing beats a Peanut Shop shaved ice. 'Tiger's Blood', Watermelon, 'Snow White', and 'Bubblegum' are among the most popular of flavors. You'll find yourself snatching every drop out of the cup when you get to the bottom of your cup.
The best thing about the Peanut Shop's shaved ice? They're a fairly healthy alternative to most desserts thanks to majority of it being ice! Tasty, tasty ice! Honorable mention for the Memphis ice cream hot spots go to the Ben & Jerry's on Beale Street, the mentioned Baskin Robbins on Summer Ave, and Maggie Moo's at the Peabody place!
