The Best Independent Bookstores in Palm Springs, CA

Of course there is a Borders or a Barnes and Noble in every shopping center these days, but what about the good old independent bookstores that we all loved to shop at before these big stores were around. Are there any of them left? Well, believe it or not, some of these fabulous stores have managed to survive. Even though when most of us think about buying a book, we plan on heading to one of the bigger chains.

Remember the trinkets, and greeting cards, and well, of course the people working these stores. Some of these stores were a bookstore and gift shop all wrapped into one, and that's what made them great. You could get a new book, shop for a gift, and have a good chat, all in once place. Not to mention the personal service we received when visiting these stores. We were actually people, and they really cared about helping us find the right book, they weren't just there to get a paycheck like it seems with some of the bigger chains.

Unfortunately, most of these smaller, independent, book stores have vanished and have been overtaken by the big, fancy book stores that feature coffee shops, tea houses, and lounges.

Number one on my list, is Just Fabulous at 515 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. This store is awesome! They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff and their store has an wonderful atmosphere. They carry tons of books, music, cards, stationary, art, home décor, and other accessories. The people of Palm Springs love them not just because of their fabulous store but, because of their support of our wonderful community. They have art on display from local artists, and regular book signings and speaking events with local authors. They are everything you could ever want in a book store! The next great independent book store in Palm Springs is Latino Books y Mas, located at 180 East Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs. This store has a wonderful selection of books and is primarily devoted to those interested learning and teaching Latin American Culture. Besides their great books, they also carry, art, music, and videos. They are a great supporter of Latin American authors, and the local community with their regular events. Another favorite, is The Book Rack (yes, they are a chain, however each store is independently owned and operated). They are located at 78329 Highway 111 in La Quinta, which is about a 20 minute drive from Palm Springs. This store has an amazing selection of used books and their prices are great. You can even bring in books that you are finished with and they will give you store credit. The staff here is friendly and they know their books.
