The Best Independent Bookstores in Bethlehem, PA

Susan Ott
A few decades ago, if you wanted to buy a book, you'd have no choice but to patronize your local independent bookstore. But like most retail sectors, book sales have succumbed to the big, bad chain stores, and many local shops can no longer compete. However, in downtown Bethlehem, PA, you will find several independent bookstores that are still thriving, supported by the local community. If you're looking for good books, both new and used, friendly service, and the intimacy of a real book shop, then try these independent bookstores in Bethlehem, PA the next time you're looking to purchase a great read.

The Moravian Bookshop
428 Main St.
Bethlehem, PA 18018
610-866-5481
1-888-661-2888

The Moravian Bookshop is more than just another book store with a café, it's actually the world's oldest continuously-operating bookstore, founded in 1745 and has been in its current site since 1871. This store has a large selection of books; the kids' section is quite extensive and houses frequent free storytimes for preschool-aged children. Because this shop is part of the fabric of Bethlehem City's community, events are constantly being held here, from workshops to author signings. Our family enjoyed a Lego event last year, and we regularly stop by on our Main Street walks to see what's new. Perhaps the best feature of this large shop is its staff; everyone is friendly and they go out of their way to meet your needs. If they don't have exactly what you're looking for, they'll order it in, call you when it's ready, and even bring it out to your car if you want. It's this personalized service and attention that make this shop a standout. And in addition to its great books, you'll also find and deli and café, gifts including the famous Moravian stars, and an entire year-round Christmas section, since Bethlehem is the Christmas City. One visit, and you'll fall in love with this independent bookstore in Bethlehem, PA.

The New Street Bookshop
515 N. New St.
Bethlehem, PA 18018
610-868-3411

This charming antique independent bookstore in Bethlehem, PA is located just a block or so off of Main St., in the heart of the historic district. Surrounded by shady streets, old homes, restaurants, and a B & B, it's the perfect spot for a quiet afternoon of book browsing. While you won't find the latest bestseller in this Bethlehem bookstore, you will find rows and rows of antique, used, and out-of-print books to add to your collection or give as a gift. As a book lover, I've been known to get lost in here, losing all track of time as I slowly and carefully go over each stack of titles. There's no sense of trendiness here, just a simple shop bursting with loved books. One side of the shop also houses a small gift section selling antiques, vintage jewelry, textiles, maps, and prints, which are also fun to shop through. If you're a true book connoisseur, then you'll really appreciate this wonderful independent bookstore in Bethlehem, PA.
