The Best of Kansas City Farmers Markets

Jenny Blake
Kansas City has a large and thriving farmer's market community. Over the years, demand for fresh and organic produce has risen in the area and growers have responded, as seen by the number of various markets located in the city and surrounding areas.

Most, if not all, of the markets are full of local Missouri and Kansas farmers providing an increasing array fresh and organic produce. Meat from animals that were raised without antibiotics and were grass fed can be found at the local Kansas City markets, as well as eggs and dairy products from animals that are raised naturally.

Kansas City's premier farmer's market is the City Market. City Market during summer weekends is a busy, hustle and bustle type place, with a huge array of produce, restaurants, and street vendors. Nearby indoor shops and a fun atmosphere make this a destination point in Kansas City. Grab some flowers, baked goods or fresh herbs while you are there. City Market is at 5th and Walnut downtown and is open year round.

Brookside Farmers Market is a real community market. Neighbors chat with friends and dogs and their owners drop by as well. Although on a much smaller scale than the City Market, Brookside Farmers Market offers a nice variety of local honey, herbs, free range eggs, fruit, flowers, artisan foods and crafts. Unique and hard to find organic vegetables are often offered for sale. Located at 63rd and Wornall, they are open Saturdays from 8am until 1pm.

For over 17 years KC Organics and Natural Market has been providing locally grown organic produce, baked goods, honey, edible flowers and entertainment to the crowds. All natural body care products are also a featured item found here. The market is open Saturdays at Minor Park from 8am until 12:30pm and Wednesdays at Park Place from 10am until 2pm.

There are plenty of farmer's markets just outside the metro area to visit as well. Overland Park Farmers Market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays and is located between 79th and 80th streets in Overland Park, KS. Produce, flowers, artisan foods and sweets are sold by local farmers in a lively atmosphere. Entertainment is often part of your shopping experience here as well, provided by local artists. The market is open on Saturdays at 6:30 and goes until sellout.

Briarcliff Farmers Market is just outside the downtown area at 169 and Briarcliff Parkway. This farmer's market offers cooking demonstrations and food tastings, as well as locally grown produce, salsa and jams, natural meats and live music for entertainment. They are open summer from 3pm to 7pm every Thursday.

The Olathe Farmers Market and the Shawnee Famers Market are both located on the Kansas side, and offer the best of Kansas growers. The Olathe market has fresh produce, flowers and bedding plants and is open Wednesdays and Saturdays until sellout. Arts and crafts, homemade breads and pies, along with fresh produce, can be all found at the Shawnee market, open 7am until 4pm on Saturdays.
