The Best Kevin Costner Movie Ever: The Postman

M. Kaye Hash
We all have movies that touch something inside of us and make us want to watch them over and over again. Many of these become classic movies to us even if they are not popular among the masses and do not get the best consumer movie reviews. The Postman is one of my classic movies and is what I think of as the ultimate Kevin Costner movie.

The Postman, another cowboy Kevin Costner movie, came out in 1997 and I have watched it at least twice a year since. The Postman is set in the future, a future that was much farther away in 1997 than it is now, after a war has wiped out civilization as we know it. People live in small communities against a group ruled by Will Patton's character General Bethlehem. Kevin Costner becomes the Postman after he finds a bag of old mail and uses it for free room and board. The Postman is a true Kevin Costner movie in the fact that The Postman is the unlikely hero, much like The Waterworld character. His lies and his deceit end up helping the communities revolt against General Bethlehem and his men.

There are moments, such as the scene in which the sheriff yells out, "Ride, Postman! Ride," that still make my heart stand still when I hear it. This is what we look for in classic movies. We may search through consumer movie reviews but if we only watch the films with the five star movie reviews we may miss out on the one movie that will touch us in a way that it did not touch everyone else.
