Alpharetta Georgia is that rare mixture of southern charm and city excitement. It is an eclectic mixture of "down home" appeal and urban stimulation. There is something for everyone. The artistic community is well represented with Alpharettas beautiful art galleries.
Originally called New Prospect Camp Ground, Alpharetta was once a tiny village that served as a trading post between the Indians and the local frontiersman. The ground was perfect for cotton and when the land lotteries of the 1800's placed its first winners there cotton became plentiful.
In 1858 Alpharetta became a town. The people began to hold a festival every year where settlers from miles around would attend. It was sometimes their only social outlet all year. The town began to grow, adding a jail and a courthouse. Many records were lost when the left flank of the Union Army passed through Milton County and the original Courthouse was burned. Dr. O. P. Skeleton salvaged many of the court documents and carried them to a hiding place in Jackson County.
