The first, and admittedly, the best place to begin your search for microbrew beer in Atlanta is at the Sweetwater Brewing company. This is probably the single largest brewery in Atlanta for microbrew beer, and offers several brews under titles such as Sweetwater Road Trip, 420, Blue, and Sweetwater Hummer. Sweetwater Brewing is about six years old, and creates beers which are considered aggressive West-Coast style brews. As microbrew beer goes, their 49,000 barrel production is on the large side, but you would be doing yourself a favor to give it a try.
They were named "Small brewery of the year" at the Great American Beer Festival. Brewery tours and sampling are available at the Brewery at 195 Ottley drive, Atlanta, GA 30024. The Brewery is in midtown, so if you're just here on business, you should still be able to squeeze in a quick tour of one of Atlanta's premier brewing operations.
The Atlanta Brewing Company was founded in 1993 and prides itself in being the oldest operational craft brewery in Georgia. New owners took over in 2005, and true to form, they left the lineup largely alone. The Atlanta Brewing Company offers several microbrews, including Peachtree Pale Ale, and Red Brick Blonde, but its flagship offering is Red Brick Ale, a brown ale with flavors of malt, chocolate, and coffee. As microbrew beer in Atlanta goes, the Atlanta Brewing company is a solid player creating good beer that isn't too heavy in B.S. Tours of the Atlanta Brewing Company are offered daily except for Sunday at the brewery at 2323 Defoor Hills Rd. NW, Atlanta, GA 30318.
The final contender is the Five Seasons Brewing company, a well-received restaurant and brewery in Atlanta that caters to folks who want a good meal with their good beer. A little heavy on the organic trend, Five Seasons Brewing is first and foremost a restaurant, but is worth a look simply for the sheer quantity of available microbrew. Crazy names and limited batch cask ales blend harmoniously over steak or seafood. There are two locations, and a third coming soon, but check out the original first in Sandy springs at 5600 Roswell Rd, Sandy Springs, GA
