The Best Markets in Bangkok

Markets in Bangkok

There are some great markets in Bangkok where you can pick up almost anything. These tend to be huge and crowded, and it can be a bit draining if you are walking around outdoors or even indoors during the heat of the day. In the late afternoon and evenings is the best time to visit. If you are in the city on holiday then you should really pay one of these a visit; they are a great place to pick up souvenirs and refill your wardrobe. Here are some of my favorite markets in Bangkok.

Pratunam Market

If you are looking clothing then this is the place to go to; if clothing isn't your thing then you might get a bit bored. This area deals in wholesale and retail and you are certain to pick up some great bargains; this market is open twenty four hours a day. You will find lots of wheeling and dealing going on in this place with people from all over the world coming to buy textiles and clothes in bulk. You are almost certain to find all your clothes requirements; just make sure you have room in your suitcase. You can find Pratunam Market on Phetchaburi road. The nearest BTS station is Ratchathewi.

Chatchuchak Weekend Market

This is the ultimate market in Bangkok but only opens on weekends. This has an astounding 15,000 stalls so there is no excuse for not finding something you like. This market can get very crowded, but it is well worth a visit. You can buy anything almost anything at Chatchuchak including plenty of traditional handicrafts and clothing. Even if you can't afford to buy anything a trip to this market is worth it just for the pure spectacle of it. Don't forget to haggle here because it is expected and you will get some great deals this way. You will find Chatchuchak Market in LadPrao. The nearest BTS station is Mo Chit.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road is probably the most famous tourist area in the whole of Bangkok. The area is also a market with stalls packed against each other all along the street. Most of the stuff on sale is aimed at backpackers and some of the items are of questionable legality; this was where many people would pick up fake degrees and fake driving licenses. If you are looking for a groovy t-shirt you will be in luck here. There is also some great second-hand book stores and stalls.

The above is only a small selection of the Markets that you will find in Bangkok. In fact if you walk around the city you will soon realise that it is just one big market; at least that is how it feels most of the time.
