The Best Mother's Day Gifts of 2009

Show Your Mom How Much You Love Her This Year Without Breaking the Bank

Stephanie Michael
Mother's day is right around the corner, it's the one day we set aside for the amazing ladies in our lives. One day of celebration isn't nearly enough to show our mom's how much we care but it is a great excuse to pamper her in an extra special way. That being said, with the economy on the fritz and unemployment levels rising I'm also interested in creative ways to save money. Here are the top 5 gifts of 2009, some are more expensive then others, but they are all from the heart.

The coupon book

Remember when you were in grade school, and you made your mom a coupon book for mother's day. With various coupons that were good for chores, hugs, errands, and other miscellaneous tasks? I say it's time to bring them back, with a slightly different twist. Now that you're older you can focus less on chores and more on doing fun things with your mom. Of course you can always include one along the lines of "coming over to make you dinner of your choice and clean up after." Some other examples include "shopping day for the two of us (or window shopping if you're on a budget!)", "Dinner and a movie; you're choice, my treat", and if you're up to it "weed the garden." Pick personalized activities that you know would be fun or helpful to your mom. Use your computer to type up the coupons and add pictures if you'd like. Then print them out and tie them together with a nice ribbon. The gift itself will bring back memories of the past and the fun activities will help build memories for the future.

Nintendo DS and Brain Age games

It's important for everyone to learn new things to excursive and maintain brain function but it's especially important as we get older. Help keep mom sharp by getting her a Nintendo DS and a Brain age game or some other learning game. It's something she would probably never get herself and although she might have trouble learning the new technology at first she will soon catch on and start to enjoy herself. Often people see the handheld gaming systems as meant for kids but with all of the learning, cooking, and crafting games out there its fun for the whole family, no matter what your age.

Gift Baskets

This mother's day say with a basket of love. When buying gift baskets you have the choice of buying prepared theme baskets online or of making one yourself. First think of something your mom really enjoys; it could be cooking, knitting, chocolate, reading, exercising or anything really. If you have the money and can find what you're looking for online than you're done! If you're on a tighter budget or looking for a more personalized ensemble make your own. You can find inexpensive baskets or perhaps something along the lines of your theme like a bowl for a baking basket or a colander for a cooking basket. Next find objects that will fit inside of your container and follow your theme. To continue with the baking and cooking baskets you could layer together the dry ingredients inside of mason jars of several kinds of cookies. Or you can make a homemade pasta sauce and put whole wheat pasta, a spoon and the sauce inside the colander. If you can't decide on a theme just find your mothers favorite things and make a basket that's just perfect for her.

Gift certificates for a spa treatment

Your mom takes care of you, your dad, your brothers, your sisters, and pretty much everyone in her life. Sometimes though, she can forget to take care of herself. This Mother's Day get her a spa gift certificate for a massage or facial. If you can splurge on a fancy spa package then do it, but if you can't, an affordable alternative is your local massage school. You can usually find much cheaper rates from the "students" who are trying to earn their credit hours. If you know she wouldn't enjoy the spa atmosphere you can always bring the treatments to her. Massage therapists will sometimes make house calls, with a portable bed and everything, add to that a basket of homemade bath salts or a nice sugar rub and she can enjoy her self in the privacy of her own home.

A homemade card and flowers

Using patterned paper, stickers, ribbons, and stamps 9all found at your local craft store) you can create a heartfelt and very personalized card for your mom. Find supplies in colors and textures you know she'll love and scour the internet for a quote or poem that expresses how you feel. Add to that a fresh bouquet of spring flowers and stop by for a nice long visit.

Your mom knows how much you love her and she doesn't need big expensive gifts to prove it. All it takes is a little time and a little creativity to create a special and heartfelt gift this Mother's day.
