Beetlejuice-Who can forget the dinner scene where all of the guests danced the calypso to The Banana Boat song (Day-o) by Harry Belafonte? Classic, funny and Catherine O'Hara is quite good.
Big-Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia playing Chopsticks and Heart and Soul on the foot piano is classic. Although this is not a traditional dance scene because it does involves music and jumping up and down I had to include it.
13 Going on 30-Because of the previews for this movie I knew that there was going to be a few dance scenes. I just didn't know it would be as fantastic as it was. What makes this one of the great film dance sequences is that Jennifer Garner tries so hard, and looks like she is having the time of her life, but she is just awful. She is so stiff and Mark Ruffalo isn't much better, but it's awfully fun to watch. And who knew that Gollum (Andy Serkis) was such a good dancer.
True Lies-True Lies is an all around great movie, really one of the last good action movies of the 90's. What I learned from True Lies is that Tom Arnold isn't as annoying as I had originally thought, and Jamie Lee Curtis can make trying to look sexy extremely funny. Jamie Lee Curtis's pole dance (of sorts) is hilarious not just because she falls on the floor but because she looks so serious through the whole damn thing.
Reservoir Dogs-Everyone knows the dance scene from Reservoir Dogs. It's iconic and has been duplicated and spoofed many times. But there is something chilling about watching Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) dance around to Bob Dylan's Stuck In The Middle With You while cutting a policeman's ear off. Disturbing and yet very entertaining.
Shaun of the Dead- Shaun of the Dead is another great movie. It's funny as hell and really quite gross. The dance sequence in this film last a whopping19 seconds but it is one of the funniest that I have seen in a long time. Not only do we get to see Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) break dance (quite well actually) we also get to see Shaun perform that unusual yet adorable dance step (the one with the arms swinging) that only European men seem to be able to pull off.
16 Candles- This is another one of the great films brought to you by John Hughes. The dance scene in the gym with dorky Anthony Michael Hall is great. What's even better is watching a young Joan Cusack dancing all by herself.
Napoleon Dynamite- I must admit that I am one of the very few people that didn't "get" this movie on first viewing. In fact thanks to a faulty DVD I didn't even know the dance sequence lasted longer than five seconds. I have since watched the movie several times and even thought I still feel like I don't get the joke I absolutely love the dance scene. John Heder is so funny and really untalented when it comes to hoofing it, which makes the movie all that more funny.
Pulp Fiction-I credit Pulp Fiction for putting the dance back into films. The scene with John Travolta and Uma Thurman is another iconic one. It's been 13 years since Pulp Fiction was released and people are still parodying the dance scene.
Pee Wee's Big Adventure- The dance that Pee Wee Herman does in the biker bar may be the best damn movie dance sequence of all time. From the shoes to the shouts of Tequila it is all around perfect.

Post a CommentThat scene in Reservoir Dogs was messed up! That song is ruined forever. I'll have to dig through my DVD collection to look for more.
Good list...Enjoyed your choiced
I like Pee Wee's dance. Great article.
Haven't seen Resevior Dogs or Shaun Of The Dead, but the others on the list, as far as dancing goes, you were right, very entertaining
How about the tango in Scent of a WOman?
Eh PeeWee annoys me. Napoleon Dynamite annoys me, except for the dance. After Dark has a bar dance scene...of course everyone gets killed afterward. heh
Great choices. The Beetlejuice dance scene is one of my all time favorites.
These were great! I loved 16 Candles!
