The Best Movies About Princesses

Lee Andrew Henderson
Most kids at some point of time either pretend they are a princess or pretend to save them. One of the reasons kids like to pretend to be a princess or save them is because there are many movies, and now video games, about saving princesses. I'm now a grown up, or at least that's what I tell people, but I still enjoy a good movie about a princess. These are some of the best movies about princesses.

Black Cauldron
I know the mention of movies about a princess is going to immediately bring Disney to a lot of people's minds. Personally I don't like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleep Beauty and all those other Disney classics. I much prefer the lesser known Black Cauldron. Black Cauldron was a Disney movie I saw when I was a small boy and I loved it, mainly because it wasn't all sappy, it was actually scary. The Black Cauldron was so scary that its stay at the theater was shortened by Disney because too many kids were getting scared.

Clash of the Titans
The Clash of the Titans features two princesses: Andromeda and Danae. There are very few stories that are as epic as the Clash of the Titans. There are Gods, swords, monsters, owls and Medusa.

Princess Bride
Perhaps the best princess movie of all-time is Princess Bride. I was actually not a huge fan of Princess Buttercup herself but overall this movie is fantastic. Cary Elwes, Andre the Giant, Wallace Shawn and Mandy Pitinkin are all their best in this movie.

Return to Oz
Everybody says that the Wizard of Oz is a classic but I find it to be overrated. I prefer the Return to Oz starring Fairuza Balk. Return to Oz was a lot darker both in plot and characters, but also not as ridiculous as Sci Fi's Tin Man.

Spaceballs
Spaceballs might be the best parody movie of all-time. Spaceballs was the classic Star Wars parody with Princess Vespa as Princess Leia's counterpart. Spaceballs created many classic movie quotes including "may the Schwartz be with you."

Star Wars
If the movie about Vespa is included then the movie about Princess Leia must be included too. I actually can't stand Leia (or Luke, it must be a family thing) but you can't deny that the Star Wars trilogy is great, or at the very least Empire Strikes Back is great.

Princess Una - Stardust
The most surprisingly good movie of 2007 included a princess by the name of Una. If you're looking for a good fantasy to watch this year forget all the Golden Compass and all these bad children's book remakes. Stardust was by far the best fantasy movie this year and is up there with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as far as quality.

The Princess Bride is my favorite movie ever! "Stop this rhyming now I mean it!" "Anybody want a peanut?"

My all time favorite is Pricess Bride. I just watched it the other day. My daughter would kill you though if she knew you didn't include Cinderella. Even though its a cartoon, it's still a movie. I'm also interested to see how the new movie Enchanted turns out. Maybe that one would fit on your list too. Great article!

What about Shrek? Fiona? That was pretty good too... Interesting choices too! I will check out the "Black Cauldron" as I have never seen that one. Thanks!
