Ossie Davis was an African- American man who found his calling in Hollywood and Hollywood was lucky to have had him do such. He has appeared in many forms of entertainment over the length of his career, but I am mostly familiar with him as a talented actor, who could have been used more prolifically in many instances. Here are my picks for the top five movies that Ossie Davis appeared in.
5. "Gladiator" - A white man vs. black man boxing movie from the early 90s, it was a regular rental for me and my action movie hungry brother growing up, but I cannot say I really recall a whole lot from it. I do know that as time passes I grow less and less impressed with Cuba Gooding Jr. performances and "Gladiator" starred him as one of the boxers. Ossie Davis was in the corner of the white guy, James Marshall, as the character Noah.
4. "Grumpy Old Men" - Grumpy Old Men is a movie that us half boring when you watch it, half funny, but not too bad to be bad. Ossie did not get to be as grumpy as the stars of the movie, but he did what he could with his screen time as the character Chuck.
3. "Malcolm X" - Eat your heart out Morgan Freeman, Ossie Davis got to lend his voice over talents in the movie "Malcolm X," as the Eulogy Performer. Shortly after that credit his next movie credit would be for voice over work again as Fredrick Douglas in "Lincoln." An interesting factoid to go along with this credit is the fact that Ossie Davis was indeed a featured speaker at the funerals of both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
2. "The Client" - Ossie Davis is a perfect character actor to take on the role of a Judge and that is what he did for the legal thriller "The Client." Specifically he was Judge Harry Roosevelt, a likeable enough man, and he reprised the role through the short lived "The Client" television series.
1. "BubbaHo-Tep" - This is a movie about a mummy reeking havoc in a retirement home and people tend to love it or hate it: I thought it was great. Bruce Campbell stars as the not so dead Elvis and Ossie Davis was his partner in crime as the not so dead and no longer white JFK. Ossie was hilariously awesome in this one!
