Don't like your child spending hours playing that video game system? Just wait it out. It will eventually get left on the floor. When it does, you will be required to put it into the trash, per the new "Pick It Up Or It's Trash" house rule. The house rules can't be broken, right?
Tired of telling your kids to stop ruining their dolls in the bathtub? Just wait until they leave them (and a few other soaked non-bathtub toys) on the bathroom floor. Scoop them all up and throw them right in the trash. After all, they were on the floor.
Tired of tripping over toys in the middle of the night? The next time you injure your toe on a toy while going to the bathroom or to check on the sleeping kids, toss it into the trash - not at the wall. Even in the middle of the night in your sleepy stupor, you must adhere to the house rules.
Yes, the "Pick It Up Or It's Trash" rule will teach your child real fast to keep things neat and tidy. In fact, it's practically the quickest way to weed out the junk in your house. Forget a garage sale. Just keep enforcing your new rule. The kids will give you an excuse to use it.
But wait, there's more! Perhaps the best benefit to using the "Pick It Up Or It's Trash" rule is the fact that one day you just might have absolutely nothing left to clean up after. No dishes to clean, no toys to trip over, no bed to make, no pile of laundry - nothing! How great would that be?

Post a CommentI know this is humorous but I can attest to having used the "pick it up or it's getting thrown away" line with a trash bag in hand. Guess how quick the kids cleaned up with that threat? it was amazing lol
This was an awesome article! I loved it, it made me laugh, and I could SOOO relate! LOL Good job, as always. Have you read my disabilities article yet? Just wonderin'! Keep writing, I so enjoy reading your work!
LOL. funny! What I used to do is walk around with 2 bags, one for good stuff, one for trash, then stick the good stuff in the back of the closet and say I didn't know where it went. Then I would "find" it later and it was all like new stuff. .
My first thought when I read this was "Wow, you must have a lot of disposable income!" Now I see you were just venting, but I think Jacques' version of the tongue-in-cheek suggestion would be extremely workable. Cute article!
I love this article - and you are certainly right - Pick It Up or It's Trash! My daughter is 30 now, so maybe I'll use this line on my hubby.
Well, it may have been written in a humorous vein, but it actually works! After giving our little one plenty of chances to pick things up, all I have to do is get up, and she runs to pick the offending items up so I don't get to them first. I don't actually throw them out but they do get put away in a place she can't reach for a period of time.
Funny article. I know my kids would not like this new rule.
Great job on this article! Very well thought out.
Haha, I do this with my fiance :P
Oh this works so well, it was done to me many many years ago. Great read.
