The Best Picnic Spot in Littleton, Colorado

Public parks began in the United States in the 1850s, with the first large public park being Central Park in New York City. Prior to the creation of Central Park, most parks were private and were enjoyed only by the upper class. Even public parks such as Central Park initially had very restrictive rules such as "keep off the grass" which made the use of them somewhat limited.

Over time, public parks developed into what we know today, as places to gather for picnics, sports and family and community events.

Sterne Park is My Favorite Picnic Spot in Littleton, Colorado

Sterne Park is my favorite picnic spot in Littleton for a variety of reasons. First off, it is in an older neighborhood and therefore is a well-established park with a lot of mature trees. It's a very peaceful park, located in the middle of a residential section of town. Although children need to be watched closely in any public setting, a big plus of Sterne Park is that it is located away from busy streets, which helps add not only to the peaceful atmosphere, but also to the safety factor.

Sterne Park has two covered picnic areas, which can be reserved for private picnics. The north shelter can accommodate up to 200 people, with covered seating for 50-60. The south shelter area accommodates up to 300 people, with a seating capacity of 80-100 people. The biggest plus of the south shelter compared to the north shelter is that it is located right next to a really nice playground. Parents can easily supervise their children on the playground while sitting just a short distance away in the covered picnic area. The south shelter also has restrooms available. Both shelter areas provide parking and barbeque grills.

In addition to the shelter areas, there are a few picnic tables scattered throughout the park that can be used without reservations. Bring a blanket to spread out for the rare chance that a picnic table isn't available, or if you'd prefer to set up your picnic under a tree or a little away from everyone else.

The park also has a nice duck pond with a variety of ducks, geese and birds and fish, and there is a walking path that goes around the pond. The pond is on the small side, but it quite beautiful, and the smallness of it makes it a perfect walk for people who may not be up to a more strenuous walk. Fishing is permitted in the pond at Sterne park; those aged 16 and older must have a fishing license.

Sterne Park also hosts many events during Western Welcome week, including a free fireworks show. Pack a picnic and bring blankets or chairs early in the day to stake out your space at the park for this popular annual event.

Sterne Park is also right across the street from the War Memorial Rose Garden, another beautiful spot for a picnic. The Rose Garden is a beautiful location, particularly when the roses are in bloom late summer and early fall. Enjoy a picnic lunch sitting inside of the gazebo at the War Memorial Rose Garden.
