The Best Pizza in New York City: Totonno's Pizzeria Napolitano

A Great Cheap Lunch in NYC

Jean Marquit
One of the best things about New York City is the pizza. Now that I live out West, I find that I appreciate good pizza more than I ever though I would. So, whenever I head east to NYC, I make sure to include pizza in my plans. It may not be glamorous, but it sure is tasty! And the best pizza in New York City? Why, it can be found at Totonno's Pizzeria Napolitano. Always great for a fast and cheap lunch, or for a casual dinner before heading to the next activity.

Totonno's has a long history in New York City. Indeed, the first Totonno's opened in 1924, and it retains the honor of being the oldest continuously operating pizzeria run by the same family in the United States. And this family has had plenty of time to perfect its pizza recipes. The brick oven taste of old style pizza is present in every delicious bite. One thing that I love about this pizza is the crust. The crust is soft and fluffy, and not greasy (the grease on a Pizza Hut or Domino's pizza is enough to make my stomach turn). You just can't get great crust like that in many places.

The other great thing about Totonno's is the value. Totonno's pizza is reasonably priced, and makes an excellent cheap lunch. Even though you could go for dinner, I do prefer to class it up a bit before hitting the town. But Totonno's for lunch is one of the best values in the City.

My Totonno's of choice is located in Brooklyn (there are three other locations). It isn't anything fancy; just a regular pizza joint, old school. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the people are friendly. It is a famly friendly environment, and it is not unusual to see children and their parents starting a tradition of Totonno's. People watching is a great art at the Brooklyn location (1524 Neptune Ave.). One always feels as though one is enjoying a great NYC pizza tradition at the Brooklyn location.

If you are looking for something a little more upscale and modern, though, you can head to (where else?) Manhattan. There are two Manhattan locations that many tourists may enjoy better than wandering about Brooklyn. And the two restaurants are conveniently located: on 2nd Ave between 26th and 27th, and one located on 2nd Ave between 80th and 81st.

There is even a Totonno's in Yonkers (on Tuckahoe Road inside a Ramada). If you are looking for the best pizza in New York City, you likely aren't far from a Totonno's Pizzeria Napolitano. And it is well worth the trip, even if you aren't.

I have never been here, but I just watched a program on the Food Network the other day about this place and I decided if I ever make it back to NYC, I have to check it out :) Great review!
