The Best Places to Find Mead in the United States

Cassie B. Adonoson
Mead is a drink that can vary in taste and flavor. Because of that, a lot of people like it, and a lot of people hate it. For those that don't know, mead is an alcoholic drink made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. It sounds gross, but can actually be quite good. The flavor can be extremely mild to that of a strong wine.

The drink itself is incredibly old. Did you know the earliest evidence of mead production dates back to 7000 BC? Mead was found in pottery in a city in China. That being said, it can sometimes be hard to find in the United States. You can also try to make it yourself, but that can be time consuming and if you don't know what you are doing, potentially disastrous. Basic mead making will take you around two months, so if you don't want to wait that long, you are better off finding a meadery. So where can you find it? Here are a few locations.

Rabbit's Foot Meadery in San Francisco, CA

This is one of the most profitable meaderies in the United States. This meadery was founded by Mike Faul, and he is distributed in many states so you should be able to find it in larger liquor stores. This meadery has a great range of styles, including dessert sweet mead.

Brothers Drake Fine Mead in Columbus, OH

This meadery opened two years ago in central Ohio, not where you'd typically think of a meadery. However, this place specializes in Scarlet Solstice, which can be dry or semi-sweet. Or try Testa Rossa, which is a red-raspberry mead.

Maine Mead Works in Portland, Maine

This is a meadery that specializes in using Maine honey. This group uses yeast that comes from South Africa, and is experimenting with a blueberry mead. This meadery was founded by Ben Alexander and Eli Cayer. They focus on the fermentation process of mead making, ensuring that that mead is made properly. They recommend letting the mead sit once it's opened, and they also recommend serving it warm so you can get the full taste of the honey.

If you are interested in more things mead, I would highly recommend the website www.gotmead.com. This site will give you links to meaderies so hopefully you can find one near you. It also has tips and tricks so if you decide you want to make your own mead, you'll be more than prepared!
