The Chicago White Sox have been members of the American League since 1901, winning World Championships in 1906, 1917 and 2005. During their history on the South Side of Chicago 24 different players who played for the Chicago White Sox have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here is a look at the 10 greatest players to play for the White Sox. The list is in no particular order.

1) Nellie Fox (1950-1963) During his 14 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Nellie Fox was an All-Star 12 times and was voted American League Most Valuable Player in 1959 when he hit .306 and drove in 70 runs in leading the White Sox to the American League Pennant. Nellie Fox ranks 2nd in team history with 2470 hits, 3rd in team history with 1187 runs scored. His number 2 was retired by the White Sox in 1976 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.

2) Luke Appling (1930-1950) Luke Appling is the White Sox all-time leader in games played (2422) and hits (2749). He also ranks 2nd in team history in runs scored (1319), doubles (440), triples (102) and runs batted in (1116). Luke was also a seven time all-star. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 and had his number 4 retired by the White Sox.

3) Billy Pierce (1949-1961) In his 13 seasons with the White Sox Billy Pierce was an All-star 7 times. He won 186 games for the White Sox twice winning 20 games in a season, 1956 and 1957. He is also the teams all-time leader in strikeouts with 1796

4) Ted Lyons (1923-1946) Ted Lyons is the White Sox all-time leader in wins (260), complete games (356) and innings pitched (4161). Ted Lyons won 20 games three time for the White Sox in 1925, 1927 and 1930. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

5) Frank Thomas (1990-2005) Frank Thomas is the White Sox all-time leader in home runs with 448 and RBI's with 1465. Frank Thomas won back to back Most Valuable Player awards in 1993 and 1994.

6) Carlton Fisk (1981-1993) In his 13 seasons with the White Sox Carlton Fisk hit 214 home runs which ranks 4th all time in team history and was a 5 time all-star. Carlton Fisk inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 and had his number 72 retired by the White Sox.

7) Red Faber (1914-1933) Red Faber ranks second in team history with 254 wins innings pitched with 4086. He won over 20 games 4 times in 1924 (24), 1920 (23), 1921 (25) and 1922 (21). Red was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.

8) Eddie Collins (1915-1926) Eddie Collins holds the franchise record for most hits in a season with 222 . He also ranks 2nd in team history with a .331 batting average. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.

9) Ray Schalk (1912-1928) Ray Schalk hit only .254 for the White Sox, but he was known more for his defense. As a catcher he led the league in fielding percentage 8 times and putouts nine times. Ray was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

10) Ed Walsh (1904-1916) Ed Walsh ranks 3rd in team history with 195 wins and ranks 1st with 57 shutouts and 1.81 ERA. In 1908 Ed Walsh set the White Sox single season record for games started (49), complete games (42), wins (40), strikeouts (269) and shutouts (12). In 1910 Ed Walsh set the franchise record for lowest ERA with 1.27. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.
