During the first trimester, you may find that you don't need to make adjustments in your lovemaking. The best position to have sex during pregnancy at this point may simply be whichever position you desire at this time. However, because you may find yourself easily exhausted during your first trimester, you may want to avoid any position where you are on top.
During the second trimester, when your abdomen (and the baby inside) is growing, you may find it most comfortable to have sex in any position which does not put pressure on your stomach. If fatigue is not an issue, you can sit upright on top of your partner (commonly referred to as "cowgirl" position).
Alternatively, you may want your partner to assume the top position while keeping his body elevated by holding his upper torso. He should keep his palms flat beside your shoulders and his elbows locked.
During your third and final trimester, you may find that the best position to have sex during pregnancy is on your hands and knees with your partner kneeling behind you (commonly called "doggie style"). Men seem to enjoy this position and you may need to remind him to be slow and gentle in his movements if you are feeling any discomfort.
Another position suitable for the third trimester is to have both you and your partner lie side by side ("spooning") while he enters you from behind. This allows for closer body contact and shallower penetration, both favorites of many pregnant women. Please note that rear entry positions can be used during the first trimester as well, if the mother-to-be feels any discomfort about having pressure on her stomach during intercourse.
The most important thing to remember about the best position to have sex during pregnancy is that it is definitely a matter of preference and comfort for the mother-to-be. This is a special time in a woman's life and it is important that the man focus on her comfort and pleasure.
If you have and questions or reservations, please feel free to ask your doctor or health care professional. Worrying about the best position to have sex during pregnancy can negatively affect your enjoyment. By seeking medical advice, you can allay your fears.
