How to Cover Up a Tattoo

Breidi Caparatta
Often times people with tattoos need to hide or cover them up for one reason or another. Whether it be work, staring in a movie or simply you just don't want someone to know you have a tattoo, make-up is often needed to cover body art. I have much experience covering tattoos with make-up since I got my first tattoo at the age of sixteen without my parent's permission. Even though I was careful about choosing the placement of my tattoo, there are still times when I had to use make-up to cover my coveted body art. Here are some great products that can mask the signs of a tattoo.

Tattoo Camo is exactly what it sounds like, tattoo camouflage. This product can conceal any signs of a tattoo. Tattoo Camo is a two step product and comes in a kit. The kit includes Camouflage Paste and Setting Powder. A third product included is Remover Tonic, but this is not needed for the tattoo cover up. The Camouflage Paste is designed to cover up the tattoo and blend in with your skin tone. It comes in different colors for different skin tones and you may have to mix colors to achieve the best blend and natural appearance. The Camouflage Paste covers the tattoo, as if it was never there. The Setting Powder is used to keep the Camouflage Paste from smearing or smudging. This product is water proof and that is what the Remover Tonic is for since you will need this to remove the Tattoo Camo. This product does work well at covering the signs of a tattoo.

Color Tration is a liquid concealer that when applied correctly can cover up the appearance of a tattoo. This product comes in a pump bottle and you use it the same way as regular cover up make-up to conceal blemishes except you are covering a tattoo. It comes with a camouflage brush that makes applying Color Tration easy as pie. This product does not require powder for setting, it is a one-step process. Color Tration comes in a variety of colors and you probably will have to mix them to get an exact skin tone match. It is also used for covering spider veins, birthmarks, scars, ect.

Dermablend offers "expert coverage" and is used by celebrities such as Michael Jackson for covering skin imperfections. Tattoo cover up is only one of the uses of this product. It can also be used for people with scars, spider veins, and other skin conditions. Dermablend has an entire line of products for all skin tones and you may have to mix and match to get the proper complexion for your skin type. Visit Dermablend.com for more information on this product.

I used to use several different Almay products to cover my tattoo. I used an Almay concealer that was slightly lighter than my skin tone and blotted it on the tattoo with the applicator sponge. After that dried, I then used a foundation that was slightly darker than my skin complexion and applied it over the concealer. After that dried, I used an Almay compressed powder puff that was my skin completion and liberally applied the powder over the tattoo. This actually did a pretty good job of covering up my small tattoo. For lager tattoos I suggest using the other products listed since they are designed for tattoo cover up.

Theater make-up can also be used for covering up a tattoo. This may not be available to everyone, but most local theaters have stage make-up that is designed to add or cover up just about any kind of abnormality. This make-up can be applied with a make-up sponge or other make-up application tool. This does work well but stage make-up is generally more expensive.

Best of luck covering up your tattoos!

Interesting article. It's too bad people sometimes feel the need to cover up their tattoos but if they feel they have to than it's great to know about these products.

Thanks for the info! My husband has been desiring to get rid of a tattoo on his arm for ages. He's a scaredy cat of the process!

One son (who made me very angry when he got his tattoo) used something to cover his. I think it was a bandage but your idea is much better.

There is a girl on America's Next Top Model who needs some of this stuff. She went on "go sees" and none of the designers wanted to use her in their show because her tattoos would detract from their clothing. I don't think she stands a prayers chance of winning because of that. She has them all over her body and they ARE distracting unfortunately.
