And then, and this is an historical moment, when that solid Midwestern common sense just reared its head and made sense of the whole world. Jake, who is from Iowa, turned to me and said, "God, that was my mother and she went on and on. But she is a woman and you can't cure that."
And then I realized that Jake, at the age of 23, had hit the pinnacle, the apex of his career. Never in his lifetime could he top that quote.
"She's a woman and you can't cure that."
It was Dale Carnegie reincarnated. It was the classic Dale Carnegie quote " You can't win an argument" reduced to its essence.
"She is a woman and you can't cure that."
It was a quote that you could tuck into your back pocket and bring out to deal with life's frustrations and it would fit every single damn time! I don't need to complain that I have arthritis. I don't need to complain that I am losing my hearing, eyesight and memory. It can all be summed up by - " I am getting old AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT."
It is not resignation, it is not quitting, it is not giving up the good fight, that quote personifies acceptance, at some point, we can only achieve peace and contentment when we realize" AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT."
It is the old saying " The only good thing about beating your head against a wall is when you quit." Because how many times do we complain and fight against things "WE CANNOT CURE' ?
You no longer have to worry about your neighbor who has an IQ a point higher than a beaver. When your neighbor rages on and on about how Obama was elected because he was BLACK, all you have to say to yourself. "My neighbor is an idiot AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT."
You no longer have to worry about your son or daughter being teenagers, when they act like someone open up their skulls , inserted an egg-beater and scrambled any common sense they possessed. All you have to say is "They are teenagers and "AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT"!
The next time you hear some conservative rant and rant on some TV News show, you don't have to get upset. All you have to say is " They were dropped on their heads as a child and AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT"
So as you go through the day and you get frustrated by one idiot after another, simply repeat this mantra - " They are an idiot and AND YOU CAN"T CURE THAT" .
Say good night Gracie.
Good night Gracie.
