For the last several years, I have been addicted to HGTV. Thanks to the home improvement, design and decorating shows, I have learned a lot of new and useful information. I also was able to use what I had learned to be able to sell our last home in three days, and make an informed decision on what I wanted from our new house. We ended up looking at over 30 houses in two days, but found an awesome house on the second day. I credit our great find to what I had learned on HGTV.
Recently, one of my husband's co-workers told us about a show that he'd been watching, called "Holmes on Homes." In the show, a very attractive Canadian contractor named Mike Holmes helps out homeowners who have been ripped off by shady contractors. Homeowners contact Mike with their stories, and he comes in to help them. In the majority of cases, what started out to be a simple issue, such as a plumbing leak or an unfinished room addition, turns into a huge ordeal. Mike usually finds incorrect and illegal plumbing, electrical and structural work in these homes. Instead of coming in and doing a simple day's work, Mike has sometimes had to tear down porches, gut entire rooms, and even gut entire houses to fix what is wrong. Once Mike "Makes It Right," he gives the home back to the homeowners, amidst hugs and tears of joy.

This show is in its seventh and final season on HGTV Canada, which isn't available here in the US. The show isn't widely available in the United States yet, however, you can catch reruns of the first six seasons on DiscoveryHome. The DiscoveryHome channel is usually not available on basic cable packages, but is you can find it on extended cable or satellite packages. If you don't currently have access to the DiscoveryHome channel, it is very worth the money you will spend to add the channel to your cable or satellite package. You can also purchase DVDs of the first six seasons from the Holmes on Homes website, located at www.holmesonhomes.com. This is by far the best reality show ever produced, and I will be very sad to see production end. However, I have all the DVDs, a copy of Mike's book which is packed with useful information for homeowners, and even an autographed picture of Mike, to help comfort me after the show is no longer being produced. Keep smiling!
