The Best Retro Songs No One's Ever Heard

Stacey Curry
In the seventies, eighties and nineties there was so much great music. Some of it many people never got the opportunity to hear. The following is my list of the greatest songs no one has ever heard. Of course music junkies have heard these songs, but to clarify, in my view far too many people have missed out by not knowing these recordings exist.

Tell Me What You Want - Loose Ends. From the 1984 album 'A Little Spice', this song is a great mix of dance and R&B. Loose Ends was a successful English band that had several hits. The original group included guitarist and vocalist Carl McIntosh, vocalist Jane Eugene, and keyboard player Steve Nichol.

How Do You Feel Tonight - Bobby Militello. This song is off of the 1982 album 'Blow- Rick James presents Bobby M'. Bobby Militello is a jazz-saxophonist that has played most recently with Dave Brubeck; and in the seventies with Maynard Ferguson. The vocals on the song I believe belong to Keeley Curtis. Bobby Militello, a native of Buffalo, NY, is one of the most underrated musicians of all time. He is amazing.

Remind Me - Patrice Rushen. Another of the most underrated musicians, Patrice Rushen had a huge hit in 1982 with Forget Me Nots from the 'Straight From the Heart' album. Also on that album is the little known song Remind Me, an even better song than Forget Me Nots.

Let Me In - Mike Francis. Mike Francis was an Italian composer who sadly died recently from lung cancer at the age of 47. Released as a single in 1984 I melt every time I hear this song. When vocalist Rosanna Casale begins to accompany Mike Francis about three and half minutes into the song the effect is compelling. If you can find this song anywhere, it will most likely be well worth whatever you have to pay.

On an Angel's Wing - Heaven on Earth. This song was released in 1988. My brother was a disc jockey in Baltimore, and he played this song. That was the only place I ever heard the song until a friend of mine found a copy in 1994 and purchased it for me. The group consists of husband and wife Joe and Pauly Ortiz. The piano arrangement is fantastic.

Under Your Spell - Phyllis Hyman. This song is off of the 1979 album 'You Know How to Love Me'. The album was produced by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. The statuesque Hyman sang with emotional intensity. Leaving the world much too soon, her passing has left a void in the world of entertainment. Phyllis Hyman left behind a legacy of beautiful music.

Survivor - Mike Francis. This 1982 release was a huge disco hit in Europe. This is another great song I never heard until the mid-nineties. Mike Francis was a fantastic composer and arranger. The electronic genre that was so huge throughout Europe in the mid-eighties owes much to Mike Francis.

Lucky - The Greg Kihn Band. This 1985 song was a great upbeat dance song. Greg Kihn is much more famous for his 1983 song Jeopardy. He also writes books and is a morning disc jockey at a classic rock station in California.

Don't Be a Fool - Loose Ends. Another great song by Loose Ends, this song is off of the 1990 'Look How Long' album. Loose Ends produced some of the greatest soul, dance and R&B of the eighties and nineties.

These are great songs that most people never got to hear. What a loss. Songs like these never received much radio play and were heard only in clubs. It is too bad. These are fantastic. It is a shame. There exists all this wonderful music missed by far too many.
