The Best Rodent Pet

George Brown
So you come home one day and there is a rat sitting on you kitchen table. What do you do? What most people do is scream and jump and try to squish or hit the rat. The rat will either run or try to bite or attack you. This is what most people think of rats. They come from sewers and they are annoying and chew everything. This is true, they do chew everything and some do come from sewers. Is this why people are afraid of rats? Because they are from the sewer and attack you if you go near one? Then why do people still dislike the fact of having a pet rat, they are domesticated and if they are kept well (not abused in any way) and they are in human contact quite often, then they can become the best rodent as a pet. People's reactions are, well why don't you get a hamster or a gerbil or even a guinea pig? Well let me tell you why.

Hamsters: Petrified of humans, almost have a heart attack every time they come in contact or see a human. They also bite.

Gerbils: Cute little rodents, without a scary tail like a rat, but they do bite and they also dislike human contact. Along with hamsters, they aren't the smartest or the greatest pets to have.

Guinea Pigs: Also petrified of humans, run away from any contact and are one of the most stupid rodents of all.The Rat

The Rat (domesticated of coarse): If handled a lot, they love human contact, when a human passes the cage they run and try to see them. They lick their owner and almost never bite. They can be kept out of their cage for extended periods of time and do not urinate or do number 2 on their owner. They can be taught tricks and are thought to be the most intelligent of all rodents. They are very cute, if you do not pay attention to the tail and are sometimes playful.

From all these descriptions of different rodents, now what do you think the best rodent is to have? The scared, dumb aggressive gerbil and hamster? The petrified guinea pig who prefers to live alone? Or the cute, intelligent, playful, rat, who is ableto be trained?

The best rodent is clear and the rat wins by a long shot!

Give the rat a chance and you will never regret it!

You can't even spell 'of course' let alone talk about animals with obviously, no good experience.
As some people here has said, the animal behaviour will mostly depend on how you raise and treat said animal.
All rodents can be amazing pets, depending on your needs.
I'm an owner of different animals, dogs, cats, a dwarf hamster and two rats.
My dwarf hamster can do as many tricks as my dog does, he can even walk straight when said, he comes when called, and he will sleep on your hand, or eat wherever you put him. He's incredibly intelligent and caring. And same with my other animals.
If you know how to motivate your pet, and care for it, they will not only enjoy and give their best, but also give you all that love multiplied.

Please, next time, get some information first, and learn how to spell.
    Thank you.

What are you basing these facts on? Where are your websites. First of all, i have three guinea pigs. They are almost 2 years old and about the cutest lovable rodents. Yes, they can be stupid (they pee and poop everywhere, even on their food) but love attention. Guinea pigs also love to live in pairs. They get lonely if alone so that is not true. Also, my guinea pig, Pepper is very lovable and sits and sleeps on me. She also licks my hands and fingers, She licks my face sometimes. Maybe hamsters and gerbils are bad pets, but if someone were to get a pet rodent, they should either get a rat or a guinea pig.

seriously i've had guinea pigs in the past and they are not scared of humans. Most of them infact like to be held and cuddled and i even had one that loved to sit on my shoulder. geez you put a bad thing about every single rodent but the rat, theres other great rodents besides the rat!

In response to Mary's comment: I have owned hamsters in the past, and it is neither harmful nor ridiculous to call a hamster dumb and scared.

I agree that rats are by far the best type of rodent to buy as a pet, but guinea pigs are also good pets. They are actually pretty intelligent and love to live with other guinea pigs.

Gosh, u just put everything bad about the other rodents, and if you give them time and you handle them a lot, all rodents will come around to love you! Rats aren't the only good rodents! Pluse we had a rat that was the meanist little devil ever! and we held it everyday for like two hours! It was weird.

Being a virtual rat myself, I of course love them. I have several real rats as bodyguards.

They have different personalities and are gentle creatures. Mine never bite humans unless I order them to. Hey! They are trained bodyguards. They all come when called by name, except for one that likes to hide when out of the cage.

Did you know that there are more humans living in sewers than rats? Those rats are the dregs of rat society, the same as those humans. Most rats live in modern cities in the woods behind your house. We have our own electrical plants and all the amenities, simply liking to live away from Georgie Bush's interference, afraid he'll label us as terrorists and hate our religion like he does Muslims.

Hey, and don't give them rat pellets. They eat almost everything you do, except meat. Mine won't touch my leftover meat. Well, we all do love pepperoni and cheese pizza and beer.

Also, wtf is with that thing about guinea pigs wanting to live alone? They're HERD animals, they become completely lethargic and depressed without company.

Now, while I'll agree that rats are one of the most fun out of all small animals to raise, I disagree with the negative comments you gave to other rodents. You obviously don't know very much at all about guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils if you think they all bite and run away from humans. All three can be quite affectionate and tame--there are always individuals who are aggressive or jumpy, but this is usually due to poor genetics or not much time being handled.
