When you pick your movies, which one is the best? You could be overwhelmed with a number of choices. I will provide you with 5 of the top romantic comedies to get your date nights started on the right foot.
Pretty Woman The queen of romantic comedies, Julia Roberts, portrays a prostitute looking for her next "job". What she finds is a love she has never known before. She is truly darling as the girl from the wrong side of the track attempting to integrate into upper class society. Richard Gere adds vulnerability unlike his tough guy roles previous roles.
Jerry Maguire "You had me at hello." This phrase is the quintessential essence of the entire movie. A young single woman falls for her boss. It turns out that her boss needs her more than she needs him. You will laugh, "show me the money", you will cry, and you will cheer. You will be amazed with the Oscar winning performance by Cuba Gooding, Jr. His character is secondary, but teaches Tom Cruise about love and relationships.
As Good as it Gets The one-liners used throughout this film will have you splitting at the seams. Lines like, "how can you diagnose me with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and expect that I had a choice in coming here" and "I take a man then take away reasoning and accountability" are classic comedic genius from Jack Nicholson. Now enter Helen Hunt as a straight laced mother and the sparks are sure to fly, eventually.
There's Something About Mary The romance is outshined by the comedic performances of Ben Stiller. How he transforms from a nerdy youth obsessed with Mary to an adult obsessed with Mary is legendary. His quick wit, along with funny antics from the supporting cast makes this film great. As a relative newcomer to acting, Cameron Diaz blends in well as the one everyone desires. Even the pizza boy professes, "I love her man."
My Big Fat Greek Wedding Everyone loves the story of the ugly duckling. But in this case you are treated by the breakthrough performance of Nia Vardalos who plays Toula. She is a middle class Greek Woman who falls in love with a non-Greek upper class Ian. Toula's family loves, yet not understanding of her choices and comedy is sure to follow.
These titles are timeless as well as a pleasure to watch. Now that you have your movie, pop some popcorn, grab your partner and enjoy.
