On April 24 1829, Louisville Kentucky opened its first public school for children under the ages of sixteen years old. This school began operation in a Baptist church at the corner of fifth and Green, which is now Liberty Street. The next year the first permanent public school was erected at fifth and Walnut Streets.

What started out with one school has now grown to over 150 schools in Jefferson County, with over 97,000 students in attendance. The public school system in Louisville is rated as the 28th largest school system in the United States.

The school's transportation system in Louisville has grown to over 1,500 vehicles, and is the 10th largest transportation system in the nation. So, picking out a school for your child in Louisville might take a little time, and also a lot of research.

Having lived in Louisville all of my life, and knowing something of the school system and the board of education, I also turned to the Internet to research the best schools in the Louisville metro area. Here is some information I found from my research.

With over 6,000 teachers in the public school system in Louisville KY, the school system in Jefferson County has become a magnet system with each school specializing in its own area of expertise. Below are the top five rated schools in the area listed in random order, along with a little information about each individual school. Each school listed below received 10 points out of a possible 10 point rating system

Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary School

This traditional elementary school provides a disciplined learning system which emphasizes the basic skills such as: patriotism, courtesy, and also the traditional moral values.

Greathouse Elementary also emphasizes physical fitness and wellness at this health orientated school. Students who have learning disabilities or obtain speech/language impairments are taught by special resource teachers. This excellent school offers extended school services, and also a fully equipped computer lab with computers in each classroom.

Students at Greathouse/Shryock Elementary School are required to wear school uniforms, and the parents of the children are expected to participate in the PTA, which is the "Parent Teachers Association."

Barret Traditional Middle School

Barret Middle School's philosophy is that each member of the school and family are also an important member of the education team. Whether they're a: teacher, clerk, bus driver, or an administrator, each individual plays a key part in the teaching of the child.

Each student must meet high standards in both academic and behavior expectations. Every student must complete homework assignments daily and also wear a required uniform.

Parental involvement is not only encouraged, but required. Each student is involved in the"sail" program. This program: (students are involved learners) gives each student a chance to learn while also serving the community.

Barret Middle School's scores on the states required "assessment test" were the highest of any middle school in Kentucky. Barret is a magnet school, and is also considered a decision making school in: education, sports, and uniforms.

Butler high School

Butler Traditional High School provides a structural learning facility with college-preparatory classes that emphasize the values of: morality, patriotism, and also self discipline. These teachings help the young adult to develop a positive self-concept, and also to become self-directed.

In this traditional program all students are expected to wear uniforms, complete homework assignments, and also be able to follow the established discipline code. Parents of these students are also highly involved in the education system, and the school's success.

Instead of having an advanced program or an honors program, Butler High School offers the "excel program," which are accelerated courses in: English, Mathematics, Science, and also Social Studies. With this excel program students can earn a special seal on their diplomas.

Butler also offers special "college-preparatory/dual-credit curriculum" and also advanced placement courses. Students can also earn collage credits in English, Algebra, Calculus, U.S. history, Humanities and also Trigonometry.

Louisville Male High School

The mission of Louisville's Male high School is to create proficient lifelong learners who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, and also communicators. This uniquely structured school emphasizes success in discipline, patriotism, and also traditional values.

Male High School features high academic standards for all of its students; a learning environment which stresses citizenship, and character. Male High School also has an exemplary attendance, along with a strong commitment from the parents.

Such teaching excels in mastery of the basics, and requires each student to declare an academic major in either: English, Mathematics, Science, or Army JROTC. Excel courses offer an accelerated program for high functioning students which includes advanced placement for juniors, and also seniors.

Louisville Male High School has scored the highest ratings in the states assessment tests for the last four years. This school has also been nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon School twice in the last eight years. Male high School continues to place nearly 90 percent of its graduates in college.

Dupont Manual High School

Dupont Manual High School is one the oldest schools in Louisville. Established in 1856, Manual was once a combination of two schools. Now the school has a body of 1780 students, and a teaching staff of 97. Manuel also has three assistant principals.

Manual offers four year programs in five different areas of teaching. These areas of expertise are as follows: Communications/Media Arts, Science and Technology, Visual Arts, High school University, and the youth performing Arts. Advanced placement is available in all of these areas of study. College Board advanced placement is also offered.

Manual's students can also participate in a number of extracurricular activities such as athletics, which are designed for students with talented and special abilities. Dupont Manual High School has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a school of excellence. Manual has also been recognized by Redbook magazine as one of America's best schools.

The faculty at Manual employs seven Ph.D.s and many WHAS/PNC bank award winners. In the past few years Manual had more "National-Merit Semifinalists" than any other school in Kentucky. The students at Manual average a 98 percent college-enrollment rate, and have also earned more than $15 million in renewable scholarships.

The recent graduates of Manual have been accepted into various Universities, Colleges, Art institutions, Conservatories, and also Technical institutes in the nation. This school excels in such subjects as: Mathematics, Media Arts, Science and Technology, and also communication in Media Arts.

So, if you're looking for a school for your child or young adult, Louisville might be the city for you. Your child's future depends on your decision. And as you can see it's not an easy one, so make a good choice.
