However, despite this trend, in the 1980s, there were quite a few mothers who could rise to the top of my "Best mom" list.
It's hard to pick just one, considering all the great portrayals to pick from: Marion Cunningham, Claire Huxtable, Maggie Seaver, Elyse Keaton, and several more.
But, there is one television mom who tends to be overlooked. And, it is a shame, because there is nothing harder than raising two daughters, especially as a single mom.
Yet, that is exactly what Ann Romano from One Day at a Time (1975-1984) did. Divorced, on her own, she found herself trying to guide two teenagers onto the right road to adulthood. Yes, she did have help from the super, Dwayne Schneider, but raising such strong-willed daughters required a firm, yet loving hand.
Barbara (played by Valerie Bertinelli) and Julie (played by McKenzie Phillips) Cooper both knew their mother was on their side. They definitely made it challenging, facing the trials and tribulations that assault you as you reach maturity. But, when it was important, they went to her for advice. It is very special when your teenage children trust you.
She didn't take the easy road. She was tough when needed, despite how unhappy her daughters were with some decisions. She always tried to do what she truly felt was the best for her girls, whether they agreed with her or not.
Ann Romano was not perfect. She made mistakes, but she always faced them head on and did the best she could. I would be proud to have a mom like her.
So, who do you think is one of the best moms of the 1980s? I would love to hear your opinion.
