The Best Songs to Play at Sporting Events

Candice
What is the best song to play for that certain sporting event? What song will get the people motivated and keeps them on their feet? What song pumps the blood through your veins? This is what goes through my mind when it comes to going to just another sporting event or going to "THE" sporting event. Playing certain songs during key moments of the game shows how much spirit and/or creativity one has.

There are the more common, well-known songs that are played during basketball, football, and baseball sporting events. Songs like Queen's "We Will Rock You", "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", and "We are the Champions". Let's not forget Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out" and Tag Team's "Whoomp There It Is". Not only are these songs used at sporting events, they're used on T.V. commercials about sports. So, while these are good song choices, they've been worn out.

When I was in college, we were inventive with our song choices. As part of the school's spirit squad, we were allowed to sit in on some of the basketball teams' practices. We played songs like John Cafferty's "Hearts on Fire" and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". We played these songs to create the 'Rocky' training mood, that no matter how much they've been worked, they had the energy to work a little harder. By attending their practices and playing these songs for them, we showed the teams that we didn't just care for the end product, we also cared about the hard work it took into being good players.

Other song choices we came up with at sporting events were the following:

The Pink Panther Theme Song: This is the perfect song to play at a basketball event. In college, our school played this theme whenever our guys would steal the ball from the other team. It creates that "sneaky" mood, sending the message to the other team that no matter what they try to do, there's no stopping us! This is a guaranteed heckler song, something that riles up the other side!

Wild Thing: We had this center on the men's basketball team that was about 5'11, but could jump and dunk a basketball like he was 6'5. He was fast and sneaky too, always stealing the ball away from the opposition and running down to the other end of the court before the other team could blink. We called him 'Wild Thing', so, of course, he had to have his own theme music. We played this song every time his name was called in the beginning of a basketball game, letting the opposition know that they had a 'wild thing' to worry about.

Another One Bites the Dust: This is the perfect song to play when your team has won a very important game or if you're on a winning streak. The men's basketball at my college was undefeated and so were their opponents. Someone had to go home a loser and after 2 overtime games, the other team lost. We played this song while the losing team was leaving the court and the fans of the opposing team were leaving. Rather than chanting, "Na na na na, Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye", this song was much more effective in achieving the "loser" feeling we wanted them to have.
