The Best Sports Movie Ever Made - Rudy

We Always Pull for the Underdog

Richard Banks
"Rudy, Rudy, Rudy." These are the immortal words from teammates as well as thousands of fans who are cheering for an underdog, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger. Rudy is by far the best sports related movie, period. Determination, perseverance, disappointment, and concession are emotions Rudy, played effortlessly by Sean Astin, embraces on his quest to play football for the storied college Notre Dame. What this movie teaches you is to never give up on your dreams and to never back down from what you believe in.

From the onset, Ruettiger is destined to be a blue-collar steel mill worker just like his father and brother. His dreams are often used as a laugh and never be considered sustainable. Determined, Rudy enters college at Holy Cross. An earshot from his goal, but a million miles away it seems. Day in and day out he focuses on one thing and one thing only, the Fighting Irish. Determination is the single most driving force for him.

Finally his dreams are realized. Through hilarious ways, Ruettiger is admitted to the university and becomes a walk-on. But being a walk-on for him, a mere 5'6" 165lbs simply means he is a human tackling dummy. Every week he checks to see if he will be able to play to no avail. Regardless of the physical injury, he never quit, he never lost focus. When on the verge of defeat, he has a well written conversation with versatile Charles S. Dutton. Dutton speaks of his own trials and tribulations as an inspiration.

As the movie moves forward, a dream is realized. Rudy gets to dress for the game and now is when the chanting begins. In front of his family and thousands of fans, runs onto the field. He has accomplished what most have said he could never accomplish. And as a triumphant ending, Rudy is carried off of the field.

This movie holds more than a value of football. It possesses an uncanny ability to be relevant to the everyman. When someone tells us what we cannot accomplish, do we settle or not? Do we give up or do we persevere? We don't give up on our dreams. Even in the darkest of hours, we may need to guidance, as Dutton gave Astin, to overcome forces against us. So if you want to watch the best sports movie ever, watch Rudy.
