Step 1, don't change a thing
For the first few days or week you want to do everything like you normally would. Place you keys and purse where you normally would. Do the same with the mail and used dished and everything else. Don't make any changes but do notice where you leave everything and how long it takes you to find certain things.
Step 2, identify your clutter spots
After a few days, look around your house the door way, the kitchen, the bedroom and place that needs organizing. What needs organizing; also ask a friend or family member what areas need organizing. Make a list of what areas need help and why.
Step 3; Change your environment, not your actions
Lets' say you dump your coat and work stuff by the front door what can you change in that zone to make it work for you? You could add something such as a basket or a coat rack. Also, remember you can take something away such as a piece of un-used furniture.
Step 4, Consider Your Options
If you decide to add something start researching, online, in store. Read some magazines; watch some organizational shows and friends and family for ideas. However you want to go about getting ideas. Remember when purchasing something check the retailer's return policy. What if the idea doesn't fit or work the way you want you don't want to be stuck with something you can't use, so make sure you are able to return the item if you need to.
Step 5, Go for it!
Put your solution to action and see what happens. If the solution helps your situation and doesn't require you to change your habits then the solution should also be easy to maintain. Don't get discouraged if the first solution you try is a bust. Just try again. You will find something that works for you, and your home. Once you find one that does work see if it helps other members of you household too. Make sure that just because the solution works for you, that it doesn't make another area messier due to another household member.
