The Best Street Food in Chicago

Sarah Toce
Chicago, Illinois has some of the most amazing and awe-inspiring food around. This is a city that made cornmeal-crusted pizza famous in all four corners of the United States. What many Chicago visitors don't realize is that some of the best food in the city can be purchased directly from a nearby Chi-town food cart on the street.

The one event you simply cannot afford to miss is the Taste of Chicago in Grant Park. This annual food-tasting extravaganza is a pay-as-you-taste activity that will leave you walking out full of great bites. Next year's Taste of Chicago will start on June 25, 2010 - July 4, 2010. Mark your calendars now for the best in street food brought right to the park. Not only will you have a chance to try out all of the street food, but you'll also get to nibble on restaurant food from carts specifically for this purpose. Get the best of both worlds! As a bonus, entry is always free!

If you're looking for a "simple" Chicago-style hot dog with all the garden works, try Morrie O'Malley's Hot Dogs on 3501 South Union Avenue. These dogs are loaded and the fries and mozzarella sticks are no slouches either. This All-American hot dog stand serves food starting at $2.00! Cash is the only option of payment accepted at Morrie's. The trade-off is the picnic table seating outside. Grab a milkshake to go!

In the mood for Mexican food but don't feel like sitting down restaurant-style? Head on over to the Pilsen section of town for some Mexican street cart food. Feel like trying out some Italian, there are some great pop-in and pop-out pastry shops in nearby Little Italy.

Headed over to Museum Campus and want to save some money on food for the little ones? Stop at the cart right outside of the Field Museum of Natural History and Shedd Aquarium for a quick Chicago-style hot dog, pretzel or burger. Later, walk along Lake Shore Drive and take in the scenery as you make your way back to the Magnificent Mile for shopping.

Street food not your thing but you want that fresh, natural taste and quick? Try Clark Street Dog for a sit-down menu that tastes like it was made specifically for you. Clark Street Dog is conveniently located on N Clark and N Halsted.

Regardless of where you go for street cart food in Chicago, enjoy it! Every last bite.
