There's nothing like a good Submarine sandwich when hunger strikes and you need to get your mouth around a great tasting sandwich...yes, there are many sub chains out there, Subway's and Quizmo's come to mind and they aren't bad for the most part, I actually do enjoy a few of their menu items, but they don't compare to the little take out spot that has been in my neighborhood for as long as I can remember..

Located across the street from Miami Community Collage, Hungry Bear has been feeding those collage kids and the nearby neighbors, both residents and local businesses for over 20 years.

It's a small hole in the world place, just for take out, with barely standing room for the customers and a small grill/sandwich area behind the counter. They don't even have a take out menu, all the menu items are written on blackboards and poster boards, wherever there is space on the walls...

They hire collage kids to work there and most of them are very pleasant and helpful in making suggestions.

All the subs are made on either white or whole grain bread and you are given your choice upon placing your order.

New items are added often so every time I go in there thinking I want something in particular I usually end up changing my mind to try one of the new specials.

The servings are always plentiful and they never skip on the meats or cheeses as do some of the chains.

For example, one of my favorite sandwiches is a Ham and Cheese melt, they are very generous with both ingredients on this one and add whatever goodies I want so I usually get it all the way, (hold the hot peppers and Mayo)...But this last visit, I was prepared to order the above mentioned sandwich when I noticed a new addition, a Reuben Sub...Now I love Reuben sandwiches as it is, so I decided to go for it...The corn beef they used was extremely lean and the melted cheese just bubbled over it...I didn't have them put on other toppings, except for the thousand island dressing so I could savor the taste of a Reuben and savor it I did.

My hubby got the Raspberry Chicken on whole wheat, which had Romaine lettuce, sliced almonds and dried cranberries...it too was truly delicious.

Other specialties they offer, which we have tried, have been the Fajita/Taco chicken, with onion, green peppers, sour cream, salsa, cheddar and the usual lettuce and tomato....this is a truly yummy sub as well.

Another one we love is the Oriental Chicken with romaine, sliced almonds and slivered almonds. I like the little yellow banana peppers on this one. Sweet yet spicy at the same time

They have so many specialties it would be hard to name them all, but I will name a few of the good old standards, the Ham and Cheese, still my favorite, two kinds of steak with onions or mushrooms, your choice of barbeque or steak sauce, always your choice of cheeses, whether Swiss, American or Provolone

They also have at least 6 kinds of turkey and assorted meat subs, all with various toppings, and quite a variety of Chicken including a Caesar Chicken and California Chicken, with honey mustard, poppy seed, teriyaki sauces, your choice or all...Best of all is the fresh grilling on all the sandwiches until the cheeses just ooze out...that is if you have cheese on your sub!

You always have your choice of lettuce, tomato, pickle, onions, Banana peppers, hot peppers, mayo, mustard, ketchup, oil and vinegar....it's all up to you

And, if you are dieting, they even offer a nice choice of salad combos, where you can have nearly any sandwich ingredients put on top of Romaine lettuce instead of the breads...it's actually all your own creation, whatever you choose.

This a family owned and operated sub shop and quality is their first concern, that and your return visit...I know we always return.

The prices are very fair too...Most sandwiches are in the $6.00 to $8.00 price range and they just added the option of taking charge and debit cards, something they did not do until this month.

Hungry Bear Sub Shop is located in the Southern part of Dade County, incorporated Kendall to be exact, across from Miami Dade Community Collage in the College Park Shopping Center~10521 SW 109th Ct.
