The game's large commercial success resulted in a line of action figures that were developed by the Toy Biz Company around 1999. They were part of the Video Game Super Stars collection that featured other Nintendo franchises such as The Legend of Zelda. The Mario Kart 64 figures were a pleasant surprise to both children and collectors alike because of the accurate resemblance they shared with their pixilated counterparts. They were approximately three to four inches tall and came with their very own go karts that featured advanced pullback action. Also, these Mario Kart figures were the first to have firing weapons that were able to attach to the karts. These weapons included missiles that had turtle shells, banana peels, mushrooms, and ghosts on their tips.
During their release, these toys were once sold for about six dollars apiece at stores such as Blockbuster Video, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and comic book shops. Unfortunately, these figures can now auction up to $120 per character at www.eBay.com. This is a real shame for children who want to own the best Mario Kart toys around. The best way to find them at a cheaper price is by purchasing them used. If you are very lucky, you may find them at thrift shops since they do in fact carry rare items. I once found a Bowser for only three dollars at a thrift shop in Fresno several years ago. It was an excellent deal, but it was the only figure they had available at the time. The Blockbuster Video I had gone to nearly a decade ago had shelves filled with these action figures.
