I've heard countless Akronites say that our city has little to offer in the way of a culturally rich environment, but I would have to politely disagree. An avid restaurant-goer, I've sampled many types of food - ethnic and otherwise - and I've come to realize that when it comes to Japanese, Akron has some hidden treasures.

Sushi Katsu: Located in the Valley, Chef Tony mans this tiny enterprise. A traditional sushi bar is the centerpiece for the restaurant, and the best seat in the house. Cozy and intimate, I find it to be the most authentic ambiance of the Japanese restaurants in Akron. The chef takes the time to interact with his guests, an integral part of the sushi experience, in my opinion. The sushi itself is very good, though I would argue a little on the pricey side. You can check out the menu on the restaurant's website: http://www.sushikatsu.com/home.

Sakura: Located in Montrose, I would deem this restaurant to be the best in Akron for sushi. The decor is not quite as authentic, but is calming and modern. It's a great place to take a date, and has a variety of fun rolls to choose from (as well as the traditional nigiri and maki rolls). They also have a great selection of cooked food to compliment the well prepared raw. I suggest trying the beef negi-maki. Sakura's prices are a bit more modest than those of sushi katsu, and I think the value is better overall. They unfortunately do not have a website, perhaps one of the only down-sides to the restaurant.

House of Hunan (Downtown Akron): I generally do not trust Chinese restaurant sushi on principle. However, I've tried and can contest that this sushi is not half-bad. Actually, I would say it's pretty darn good. They have a variety of rolls and selections, and the prices are really reasonable. If you are not a particular sushi snob, then this would be a great place to find good value. The restaurant itself is pleasant, though it feels more Chinese than Japanese (obviously), but I also love that they offer Thai selections alongside the Chinese and Japanese dishes they serve. You can find their menu on their website: http://houseofhunan.net/houseofhunan/Default.aspx.

Golden Dragon: Located on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls, this is another fusion restaurant. They have 2 different menus, one for Chinese food, and the other for Japanese. You have the option of sitting at low tables on the floor (a traditional Japanese option) or sitting at a regular table. This is a great place for groups of people that include those that are not so enthusiastic about sushi-as they have the option of eating Chinese food. The sushi is good, and the prices are reasonable. The staff is friendly and I've had great experiences eating there. They do not have a website, but are most certainly worth checking out.

Obviously, there are other places in Akron to find sushi, however, being the sushi-snob that I am, I can tell you these are the best.

Happy dining!

Thank you, I was not aware of Golden Dragon and it's right around the corner! I hope I can convince my boyfriend to sit on the floor. I also didn't know about Sakura, I thought you were talking about the one in the mall at first :-)

My husband and I love Big Eye Sushi. We have been there 10 times in the last 6 months and it never disappoints. The servers are always very polite and promp with their service. The sushi is always very fresh and delicious. Our favorites are the Rainbow, Volcano and the Big Eye C. Have been to other, more expensive sushi and resturants and this one is just as good for less.
