The Best Tearjerker Movies

Films Bound to Make a Person Cry

Jennifer Habersham
As we say down in the south I love me some movies. I love a good laugh and sometimes I love a good cry even more. What surprises me the most is that I never cried at a film until I had children. I can remember watching Terms of Endearment with my parents when I was in my early 20s and thinking, wow Shirley McClain is a good actress, but that was about all the emotional reaction that I had to this movie. After my first child was born I watched Terms of Endearment again and when it comes to the scene with Aurora screaming "Give my daughter the shot" well, to be honest even thinking about it send a huge lump up into my throat. Here's the top six films that reduce me to a watery mess.

Toy Story 2

In general this movie is really cute and pretty damn funny, but when Jessie sings about Emily, the little girl that use to be her owner, I get all misty eyed and chocked up. I think a lot of it has to do with the song "When she loved me" by Sarah McLaughlin. That's the double whammy, a sad story line with even sadder music.

Braveheart

Growing up in Scotland I got to hear the story of William Wallace quite a few times and although the movie takes quite a few creative liberties it is no less a great movie. I don't mind the blood and gore and of course the reason why Wallace is fighting is very romantic. But in the end when he is being mutilated and he sees his dead wife who has come back for him at his death guts me myself. It doesn't matter that I've seen Braveheart close to 100 times. That scene makes me cry without fail.

The Green Mile

I remember when The Green Mile came out in 1999. Everyone who saw the film would tell me how great it was but I had absolutely no desire to see this film. I thought the trailer looked boring and to be honest I was quite tired of Tom Hanks (remember at this time he had just won back to back Oscars). Then one day while traveling cross country my husband and I stopped into a hotel and watched The Green Mile while it was still on pay-per-view. The fact that John Coffee died wasn't all that sad that's what the movie was about. But it was watching actor Berry Pepper crying and actor David Morse trying not to that just tore me up. I hadn't sobbed that hard since, well, Braveheart.

A.I Artificial Intelligence

Other than Star Wars and Space Pirates (remember that one "I've got space herpes"!!!) I'm not a huge fan of science fiction film. A.I. would be no exception. I hate this movie. It was boring and mediocre at best. So it should go without saying that I've seen this movie only once. But what I do remember is when Monica takes David out to the woods and abandons him. Listening to the little boy droid cry and not understand why his mother would no longer love him tore me up.

Passion of the Christ

Cried like a baby through the whole thing. I purchased the movie and could only watch it once. If you haven't seen it it's not anti-Semitic at all.

Blackhawk Down

I love war movies. The bloodier the better but this is a hard one for me to watch. You see my husband is not only in the Army he actually is a Ranger. He had just come back from his first deployment to Afghanistan when we went to see this movie. I never asked him if the movie was a good representation of war because I honestly didn't want to know. This entire movie makes me sob.

Terms of Endearment gets me every time. And Somewhere in Time. And AI killed me. There's nothing more heartbreaking than watching an entire planet die.
