The Best Television Shows Filmed in New York City

Sex in the City, Sopranos & the Honeymooners All Filmed in NYC

New York City, New York - also known as The Big Apple - Manhattan and any number of other names, plays host to the theater district on Broadway. It's also America's financial capital on Wall Street and hosts most major news networks in the USA, such as ABC, NBC and CBS. It's not usually thought of as Hollywood, but several of the most beloved TV shows have been filmed in the Empire State's most famous city.

Think of NYC as Hollywood East. Here are NYC's best TV shows - those set in New York City and filmed there as well.

Sex In The City

This risqué HBO dramedy redefined sexual morales of the modern urban woman for better or worse. Certainly for the careers of stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, it was definitely for the better.

The show filmed in NYC in such locations as Bryant Park in Manhattan, the meatpacking district, Perry Street in Greenwich Village was Carrie Bradshaw's apartment. Its home studio base was Silvercup Studios East, in Long Island City and Queens.

The Honeymooners - Classic Episodes 39

Baby, you're the greatest - New Yorker! Jackie Gleason played Ralph Kramden so larger than life lovable, that he may have been the greatest fictional bus driver from New York City, and the classic 39 episodes of the beloved sitcom were filmed in New York City.

The classic episodes were filmed in Manhattan at the Craig Theater - later renamed The Adelphi. The theater opened up in 1928. Bye Bye Birdie, Damn Yankees and Wait Until Dark are two of many movies which were filmed there. The New Hilton Hotel now stands on the ground occupied by the theater, after it was demolished in 1970.

The Sopranos

Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) was a mobster in need of tender loving care. He sought out counseling from Dr. Melfi (Loraine Bracco) and a modern mafia legend was born.

Created by David Chase, The Sopranos premiered in 1999 and filmed mostly in New Jersey, but also at Silvercup Studios in NY, NY. Streets where Tony, Big Pussy and the gang plied their gangster trade can be found in Secaucus, West Orange, Jersey City and Yonkers, NY. I've lived in the area for years, and the show filmed a few blocks from my house. Mom was lucky enough to catch it. Ugly Betty

This dramedy, created by Silvio Horta, was recently canceled - after moving back from Los Angeles to New York - and after originally filming the pilot in New York. Maybe they should have just stayed put in the Big Apple, and the show would have lasted longer.

Betty (America Ferrera), the nerdy, fashion challenged girl who snags a job at high fashion Mode, found the challenge of such a high powered career stimulating, though also hysterical. The show itself filmed in Silvercup Studios and Queens, NY.

CSI: New York

Courtesy of the illusion of Hollywood magic, this popular crime drama - another spin-off in a long line of CSI shows from producer Jerry Bruckheimer - shoots much of its action in Hollywood, California. Still, its NYC roots are actually explored for real.

Stars Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump), Melina Kanakaredes (Providence) and Eddie Cahill make it all look easy as they catch the bad guys utilizing the latest in forensic science, combined with Sherlock Holmes and Columbo like detective sleuthing. Since the show mixes west and east coast locales to fool viewers into thinking it is filmed all on location in New York, it's a fun thing to try to spot the "fake" NYC environments.

Well, I have seen the Honeymooners and a few of the SATC episodes. NY is a great place to place a show / film, but the theater is where it's really at!

    Love NYC and these shows!

I keep thinking Law & Order is the only show they bother filming in New York these days. I know NYPD Blue was mostly shot in Los Angeles with a few exceptions.

Classics! I never watched first runs of Sex in the City. Got hooked in reruns. On the other hand, we watch Sopranos and Honeymooners over & over & over!

Made me think of a show called "New York Undercover" that was on FOX in the early 90s. Great little cop show.

You know, Will, the Honeymooners was a classic. Only in NYC could you film 99% of the show inside a cramped tenement and still attract millions of viewers! Of course it help that Gleason was involved in the show :) Cheers!

Interesting. It's not a thing I ever thought about. Now I do wonder why there aren't more though.
