The Best Time to Visit Mexico

How the Climate and Weather Should Influence Your Decision

Gideon Dragstra
Weather-wise, when it comes to deciding on the best time to visit Mexico you will have to realize it's basically the same as trying to pick the best time to visit the United States or Europe. It's hard to think of Mexico as a sunny country when you visit places like Toluca or its capital Mexico city during the winter months. This December people were ice skating and having snow ball fights right on the Zocalo, the city's main square.

True, it was all happening in artificial ice skating rings and snow tents. (The only way to see real snow in Mexico is to climb the Popocatepetl volcano during the winter months). But with temperatures as low as 5 Celsius/ 41 Fahrenheit during the late evening and night it almost seems like you're in a Northern European city.

A three hour drive away from the capital though, Acapulco in December can be as hot and humid as ever with temperatures up to 32 Celsius/90 Fahrenheit!

Many travelers going to Cancun are often worried about the rainy season there. Cancun and the whole Yucatan peninsula are home to one of the world's most sunny climates, but occasionally strong winds and rain occur during the months of September, October and November. But don't worry too much about it, it's nearly guaranteed that you will see the sun every day of your stay.

In July, August and September, the sky can change from overcast to clear in minutes. From November to April, there are usually blue skies and a cool northern wind.

The climate changes are minimal in this area, so you can safely always just pack clothes for swimming and warm weather. But a light jacket or sweater is advisable for the evenings of November, December and January.

Yucatan's inland areas and the state of Chiapas tend to be ten to fifteen degrees warmer than the coast, which is perfect in winter, but furnace like in the spring (up to 43 Celsius/110 Fahrenheit !).

In short, unless you're visiting the capital or any of the cities located on the high plain in central Mexico during the winter months, don't let the weather influence your decision on when to visit this beautiful country. It leaves you the freedom to plan it around the many exciting cultural events or the best possible travel deal.
