The Best TV Show of the 80's: Punky Brewster

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
"You may be lonely and then, One day you're smiling again. Every time I turn around, I see the girl that turns my world around. Standing there..."

Punky Brewster showed all of the little girls of the world that it was okay to fight for what you wanted and what you believed, and that it was okay to be different. Her miss matched style and spunky attitude were something even I looked up to as a ten year old when the show first started its four season run.

Punky Brewster first aired in 1984 and it ran for four years after that. It was a show about a little girl named Penelope "Punky" Brewster. Punky's mom abandoned her and her little dog Brandon. Desperate to stay out of foster care Punky set out to find herself a home and found it with a sometimes grouchy, but mostly sweet, older man named Henry. Henry welcomed Punky into his home, and Brandon (though she had to sneak him in at first).

Punky was played by the beautiful, and cute as a button, Soleil Moon Frye. Frye was eight when she began playing the colorful character Punky Brewster. But she had started her life of acting at the age of two when she saw her father and brother on television. After this she knew exactly what she wanted to be.

All four seasons of Punky Brewster are readily available on DVD so that many generations will be able to enjoy and experience the unconditional love of this heart warming children's television series. Each seasons deals with different things. From season ones antics of Punky trying to keep herself out of the system so she doesn't become lost and faceless... and lose her best friend Brandon (the dog) to season three when Punky gets into trouble for skipping school and even stealing a pig. In season four, the very last season of Punky Brewster, Punky opens our eyes to the trials of being a child in the 80's by confronting things like child abuse and illiteracy.

After the live action Punky series ended a spin off cartoon, called 'It's Punky Brewster' ran from 1985 to 1987, using the voices of the same actors who played in the original.

If there was a little girl in the mid-eighties who didn't love this fun and fresh show it was because they didn't have a TV!
