The Best Type of Wine Lists

Kimberley Riccio

There is a collection of wine lists published each year by sommelier, wine organizations, travel experts, wine connoisseur magazines and the Restaurant/Hospitably organizations. Each listing provides different information for the customer to make an inform decision about the types of wines and vintages to buy or the types of restaurants for excellent wine and dining experiences. Master Sommeliers and wine experts compile the best lists. These lists provide a complete picture; such as the type of wine, wine ranking, about the winery or vineyard and the location.

Sommelier and Experts

Several Sommeliers and experts publish books, lists and websites devoted to the ranking of wine. These lists provide information like which wines are widely available, the quality and value of the wine. A complete list presents an informed review of the wines characteristics. A wine buying list also reviews and ranks the wine using the standard of a 100 pt scale and gives an estimated dollar value to the bottle. The top expert list belongs to the man that came up with the 100pt scale that is now used by most sommelier and wine experts in the world. Robert Parker's online lists of weekly buys, vintage charts are review by millions all over the world.

Annual Wine Organization Lists

Produced yearly, these lists give a 12-month evaluation of wines that wine expert organizations have reviewed and rated during the year. These lists review wine trends and regions. They also recognize outstanding wines and wineries. Some of these annual lists also take in the consumer's evaluation, so that you get an overall picture of the wine. You learn about what the expert has to say, but you also learn what a regular wine drinker likes about the wine. The annual list has four categories; quality, value, availability, and consumer excitement or passion of the wine.

Restaurant Lists

Restaurants and Hospitality organization reviews and awards for the best restaurant wine list. Many restaurants keep their wines lists as the major portion of their business. An impressive wine list will gather new patrons and will keep the regulars coming back. A superb restaurant list divides its wine into two basic categories with sub-categories. For example, a wine list will have an international section and a US wine section. It will be further broken down into reds, whites, with a sub-category of cabernet, chardonnay, merlot, etc. A bottle description will convey a sense the wines characteristics. The description may also offer wine and food or dish pairings.

Wine Stores

Top of the line wine stores publish wines list for their customers. These lists provide information what the store holds in stock or is going on sale. Top stores that host or have a staff sommelier will also include a list of wine tasting classes. The classes will provide instruction on wine tasting, but also information about the different wine regions. In providing wine lists, events and classes, wine stores keeps their customers well informed about new wines and wine trends
