The Best Valentine's Day Gifts for Men

Megan Butler
He only tolerates sappy Valentine's Day cards, doesn't like facials or flowers, and rolls his eyes when Valentine's Day songs come on the radio. Some holidays are unisex. Valentine's Day is just not one of them. Which is why most of the traditional Valentine's Day gifts are tailor made for girls and the men in their lives just have to put up with them (or get nothing at all!). This Valentine's Day, why not give your boyfriend or husband a gift that he'll really like? Here are some great Valentine's Day gifts for men that are inexpensive and designed with men in mind.

Head Outdoors

Last Valentine's Day, my gift to my boyfriend was a camping trip. He knows I'm not a big fan of sleeping outside, so the gift was romantic even though there were no flowers or candy involved. If a weekend camping trip is too hard to put together (or he's just not that into it), consider something else. What about go-carting? Or a couple of rounds of paintball or golf? Once my mom went to the shooting range with my dad as a Valentine's Day gift. Think about the things he used to do with his buddies before he started spending all his weekends cuddling with you on the couch.

Spoil Him

A great Valentine's Day gift is to make the day all about him. Cook him his favorite meal (or order several dozen hot wings and two large everything pizzas if that's what he likes). While the meal is cooking (or you're waiting for the pie to be delivered), set up a couple of cold beers and some chips in front of his favorite video game playing chair. You might even offer to play Halo with him if he'll go easy on you. Then rent his favorite movies. I'm pretty sure an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie marathon won't kill you if you only have to sit through it once.

Indulge Him

Surprise him by bringing back his ugly, tattered lazy boy from storage. Let him put a foosball table in the living room. After all, he lives there too. Even if you have to explain away the fluorescent eye sore that is his favorite St. Pauli's Girl beer sign every time company comes over. Every time either of you look at it, it'll remind you of how much you love each other. And, it won't cost you a dime (although I might throw in dinner to boot).

Buy Him Something He'll Really Like

Please stay away from ties or boxers with hearts on them. Those are terrible Valentine's Day Gifts and I haven't met a single person who likes them. Men are actually easy to buy for if you stick to the big four: food, beer, sex, sports (or whatever hobby he happens to be into). Why not get him a subscription to the steak or beer of the month club? Or, if that's a little too pricey, make him a naughty coupon book that can be redeemed at his leisure. If he's into sports, what about a subscription to one of the all-sports-all-the-time channels that your cable service provides (I recommend combining this with the coupon book so you can remind him to come up for air)?
