One of the most notable areas in which Victorian Christmas décor can come into play is with the Christmas tree. While the Christmas tree is German in origin, it didn't become popular until Queen Victoria and Prince Albert displayed one in Windsor Castle. Of course, since that time the Christmas tree has become a dominant symbol of Christmas.
Victorians loved to decorate. However, their sense of style was lavish, chaotic and very elaborate. They loved to use bright colors too. All of this was brought into their Christmas décor too. The Victorians wanted their trees to be as colorful and fancy as possible. For this reason, they used small toys, miniature bells, Christmas figurines and candy as a part of the Christmas décor that they used on their Christmas tree. Many Victorians also did some experimenting with their Christmas decorating. They did this with the lighting of their trees, using everything from candles to gas or oil lamps which they called bubble lights. Today we are fortunate to be able to safely light our Christmas trees with miniature electric lights but candles are an especially beautiful Christmas décor that can also be used if done right.
In Victorian times candles were necessary for lighting a home. They were also quite decorative and thus it should come as no surprise that they were also used as a part of the Christmas décor. Of course, they weren't only used for Christmas décor but they were also used to create the home's atmosphere as well.
While the Christmas tree is the center of Victorian Christmas décor, there are also other things that you can do throughout your home to give it a Victorian flare this holiday season. For instance, you can use an ornate, woven mantle for on the dining room table during the traditional meal on Christmas Eve. You can also place gold-sprayed pine cones around your home. The Victorians also loved candy canes, so you could also lay these around your home as well.
