1) Fallout 3 - PC | Xbox 360 | Playstation 3

It was tough to give Wrath of the Lich King the number two slot, but this game deserves nothing lower than the top spot as the best game of 2008. Fallout 3, the third installment in the Fallout series, throws all preconceived notions about what is capable in a video game out the window. he game features interchangeable first-person and third-person perspectives. Main character creation occurs as the player experiences the character's childhood.

As a child in the Vault, the player reads a book entitled "You're SPECIAL". The player can then set the seven primary attributes or "Special Stats". The player receives weapons training later on during childhood, and the player's performance in various tests suggests a set of skills for the player. Several quests inside the Vault influence the player's character relationship with his or her acquaintances. Skills and perks are like those in previous games: the player chooses 3 main skills out of a total of 13 to be the character's specialties. The maximum level the player can achieve is level 20; every level up, a new perk can be selected, each offering advantages of varying quality and form. Traits from the previous Fallout games, while slightly modified, are combined with perks in Fallout 3, allowing the player to choose a new perk each time after gaining a level.

The turn-based combat system called Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or VATS, is an important part in the combat of the game. While in VATS, real-time combat is paused, and action is played out from constantly changing camera angles in a version of 'bullet time', creating a combat system that the Bethesda developers have dubbed as a hybrid between turn-based and real-time combat. All actions cost action points. This limits the actions each combatant can take during a turn; however, both the player and enemies can target specific body areas for attacks to inflict specific injuries.

The game features an extraordinary setting, an impressive score, amazing graphics and visuals, over 100 hours of possible game play, and an All-Star voice actor list, including Liam Neeson, Ron Perlman, Malcolm McDowell, and Odette Yustman. Players will also have the ability to install mods on the PC version. By focusing on non-linear game play, an interesting and engaging story, with sprinkles of dark comedy, and by including adult themes, such as violence, and the wickedness so heavily featured in the previous installments of the Fallout series, it should be no surprise that Fallout 3 is the best game of 2008.

2008 has set the bar much higher than anyone could have anticipated. But 2009 is right around the corner, and boasts an impressive list of highly anticipated games. Whether or not they will deliver remains to be seen. But with a smorgasbord of solid titles to choose from, the situation is a win-win if you are a gamer, and you have nothing but good things to look forward to.
