The Best Way to Eat Marmite

Alexandra Morgan
You've probably heard a few people talk of England's beloved Marmite with a grimace on their face and possibly even mention the word disgusting when describing it. I'll admit that Marmite was a bit of an acquired taste for me when I first tried it years ago, but I've come to really love it now. To fully appreciate Marmite in all its B vitamin packed glory, you have to eat it the right way.

Just to clarify before I go into the best way to eat Marmite, I am talking about the British version of Marmite, not the Australian/New Zealand version because yes, there are two versions with differing flavors.

There's Only One Way to Eat Marmite

So, what is the right way to eat Marmite? The best way to eat Marmite is on a piece of toast with one slice of cheddar cheese melted on top, and a good size dollop of Marmite spread across the top of the cheese. You want just enough Marmite, but not too much because it does have a bitter taste to it, and you don't want to completely over power the open-faced sandwich with it. The American sliced cheddar cheese really is the best for this particular sandwich; if you get too fancy with cheese selection, the cheese and Marmite tastes compete with each other too much.

The trick to this sandwich is spreading the Marmite at just the right time because it has quite a thick, sticky, gelatinous consistency and can tear the cheese and bread if spread when the cheese is too hot or when it has gotten too cool. You'll want to wait a few moments and then spread your dollop of Marmite over the top of the sandwich.

Marmite B-Cause

There is one great reason for anyone to become a Marmite lover -- it is chock full of B vitamins. The Marmite open-faced sandwich is a great breakfast option, it gives you your protein, calcium, fiber, and all kinds of vitamin B boosts to get your day started right.

A Closing Word of Caution

I encourage you to try Marmite if you haven't, but go slow and easy on the first try because it is a sharp and bitter taste that may take some getting used to. If you can manage to get through your first Marmite tasting though, you'll reap the benefits of tons of B vitamins.

Marmite is available in the foreign food section of most major grocery store chains.
