In the coming decade and beyond, there will be no shortage of employment for American workers. As the baby boomer generation exits the workforce there will be 60,000 people a day retiring. Companies both large and small will be scrambling for not just employees but qualified employees. Initially employers will fill their ranks with any warm body. Turnover rates will climb for employers who fail to use assessment tools to make sure the candidate has the cognitive and behavioral characteristics that will ensure success. Companies who want to keep turnover costs low will turn to the new technology that is available to prescreen candidates online prior to a subjective interview. The Aberdeen Group, a leading consulting firm that investigates the return on investment that technology can bring to business recommends that employers use online assessment tools that prescreen applicants to reduce the time it takes recruiters to bring qualified applicants to the interview process.
Currently, hiring managers and recruiters use a process similar to this to find an applicant. On one of the national job boards, they will do a keyword search, for example, to find a salesperson. When they search for resumes containing the word "sales" they will find any and every candidate who has the word "sales" on their resume. You as a job seeker may be a consultative salesperson who has closed sales with executive level contacts. Your resume will be grouped in with anyone who may have had a part time job as a sales clerk at a pet shop. Your visibility to this potential employer depends on the time and resources they have to actually find you in those results!
By registering yourself with a job board such as the one listed in the additional resources for this article, you can bring yourself to the employer for the position you are seeking and be seen without the employer having to filter through all of the non relevant resumes. This is done by taking an online behavioral and cognitive assessment that along with your education and experience will show the employer you are a right match for their job and company. The employer simply opens a daily email that lists your name, test results and resume information. In addition, you get a valuable personal assessment report that can be used to prepare you for the interview process.
As you look for your next job or step in your career, keep in mind that technology has increased the chance of the employer connecting with the right employee. Use the online tools that employers are using and make yourself visible. Job specific online assessments are and will be the key to securing the best position.
