The Best Way to Lose Weight

It's Not as Hard as You Think

Judy Kramer
Our society is obsessed with losing weight. Every time we turn on the television, we are inundated with commercials and infomercials about a new weight loss program. Or a new diet pill designed to help people lose weight. It seems like every time we turn around there is a new fad diet, whether it be low-carb, no carb, protein shakes, the miracle pill, and a myriad of other quick weight loss products. It can be mind boggling.

Unfortunately, none of them work in the long term. Initially, the weight will come off really fast. But as soon as you stop taking the pills or go off the diet, the weight comes back on. And in most cases, you gain even more.

There is only one true way to lose weight. It isn't a big secret, but it is something people have forgotten about. It's self-control. It's the hardest thing to learn, but once you start practicing it, you will lose weight and keep it off.

Here are a few tips on losing weight that differ from the normal diet plan. And they will allow you to lose weight.

Before I begin, let me first say that you should always check with your doctor before starting any weight loss program.

The tips are all related to each other and they really are common sense tips.

1. Smaller Portions- Do not fill your plate like you're feeding an army. The more you have on your plate, the more you're going to eat. So instead of two monster spoonfuls of mashed potatoes, have one regular spoonful. Instead of two hamburgers with everything, have one hamburger. You get the picture. It really is about portioning. This is why programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are so successful. They teach their clients about portioning their foods. They are not specially made foods. It's just smaller portions.

2. Do not deprive yourself of certain foods. Unless you have an allergy, you shouldn't deprive yourself at all. If you want a piece of chocolate cake, go for it. Again, it's in the portion. Have a small piece of cake, but don't eat half the cake. The main problem with the diets that say not to eat certain foods is that your body actually does need those foods. You will end up cheating on the diet and eating those foods in excess. Then you're back to square one. So why deprive yourself. Eat the foods you like, but just cut back on how much of them you eat.

3. If you want to snack, eat healthy snacks. Raw vegetables and fresh fruit are filling and good for you. Popcorn is also an excellent snack.

4. Do not starve yourself. Crash dieting and starvation diets do not work in the long term. It is the worst thing you can do. Once you start eating again, you will over eat and the weight will come back on.

There are several food groups. We need to eat a healthy balance of each one to maintain our bodies in a natural way. Taking away a food group, unless there's a medical reason, throws that balance off. It will result in short-term weight loss, but the weight will come back eventually. When you sit down to eat a meal, portion your helpings so when you've finished you leave the table satisfied. Do not stuff yourself to the point of being miserable.

The final key to losing weight is exercise. Even if you only go for a walk around the block, the point is to get some exercise. You don't have to power walk in order to lose weight. Go for a stroll with your spouse or your kids. You're burning calories and a normal pace will be much easier on your knees. The key is to move around. You'll feel better and it does help in losing weight.

Losing weight is not really as hard as it seems. People don't like diets because they think they have to give up their favorite foods. That's just not the case. Eat what you want, but do so in moderation. Stay away from diet drinks and pills and do not deprive yourself of your favorite foods. Pay heed to the portions you're eating and exercise. Soon you'll find yourself losing weight at a normal pace.

These tips do work for those who only need to lose a few pounds. As I said earlier, before going on any diet, always check with your doctor. Good Luck!
