1. If a computer is readily available, enter forums or write articles for Associated Content so you can keep yourself occupied. Nothing says fun when you're interacting with others when the person in the cubicle next to you has no idea!
2. Bring a book or magazine...but hide it in your drawer when the boss walks by. When I first started this job as receptionist, I felt like all I ever did was answer phones, fill out forms for the courier and order supplies. I still do that but once in a while when I see an attractive magazine cover, I'll pick it up and browse through the daily gossip. It keeps me occupied when there's that big gap in between phone calls and other office annoyances.
3. Keep in mind that you have a job whereas unemployed persons are going through dreadful job interviews and searches. We all remember when we were first looking through the classifieds in the newspaper, craigslist, monster.com, etc. We also remember how irritating it was to hear, 'We'll give you a call' which mainly translated into, 'You will be considered but please don't call us because there's a better person for the job.' Oh yes, be thankful.
4. Ask your fellow co-workers if there is anything you can help them with. Believe it or not, when you're doing work other than your own, it's self-rewarding and you're learning something new. It may also be the new word spread around the office that Joe Shmo doesn't just stay at his desk but is very helpful. Promotion much?
5. When you're severely in the pits, temp agencies are always hiring new associates. They're a guaranteed job which will better suit your finest job qualities and they will find the perfect job for you. Now, even though most temp agencies take a bite out of your paycheck, not all do. You have to do the research on your own and ask, ask, ask! They will be very direct with you and will inform you on your earnings at the agency. The temp agency I currently work for as an associate does not take anything out of my paycheck. Instead, the client pays them while you're working.
Good luck!
