The Best Ways to Travel Around South Africa
South Africa is a Popular Tourist Destination with Good Transport Systems
Buses in South Africa
South Africa has several companies that operate buses between the bigger cities. Some of these have a bad reputation and their vehicles have been involved in serious accidents. Before booking a ticket, do an internet search on the company and see if any negative results come up. Bus services within cities are available in certain areas but minibus taxis are far more common.
Taxis in South Africa
When a South African speaks of a taxi, they are normally referring to the minibus taxis that are one of the main forms of public transport. These are used mainly by local people as a means to getting to work and back. Overloading is extremely common and the maintenance is often questionable. They are not recommended for tourists.
Traditional taxi companies also operate in the cities and airports and these are safe to use. Look for one that has professional branding and a meter.
Trains in South Africa
There are overnight train services that run between cities and commuter trains that run frequently during the day in some areas. There are many problems with crime and violence on the trains and if a tourist uses them, it is best to choose a carriage with many other people in it or one that has a security guard. The Gautrain between Johannesburg and Pretoria is the exception to this and is a modern comfortable train with constant surveillance and a police presence at stations.
Car Hire in South Africa
Car hire is generally the best option for people wanting to tour South Africa. There are a number of reputable international car hire companies operating and the cost is affordable. There are some important things to remember when driving on South African roads:
• Always keep the doors locked
• Don't drive with windows down in built-up areas
• Ensure the spare tire is pumped before embarking on a road trip
• Never pick up hitchhikers
• Be aware that hijacking is common and exercise caution at deserted intersections
Flying Around South Africa
There are a number of airlines that operate in South Africa and finding a flight between cities is fairly easy. Some of the low cost airlines offer extremely reasonable airfares.
There are a number of travel options in South Africa but some are more efficient and safer than others. For those wanting to tour the country, car hire is probably the best choice.
