The Best Wikis on the Web: From Wikipedia to Illogicopedia

Bo
Being the internet-addicted man that I am, I have recently become obsessed with "wikis". Made popular by Wikipedia, wiki software is now available for any Average Joe to make an interactive website. A wiki (web based interactive kollaboration implement) is a Web site that is run completely by its users. Most wikis are similar in format, but have different topics. Almost anyone can write or edit a wiki, all you need is a computer! By allowing anyone, even anonymous users, to edit wikis, you guarantee that you will have diverse and (mostly) correct information. Most wikis are specialized, dealing only with specific areas of expertise. Listed in this article are the best wikis in the business.

Wikipedia
Share your knowledge with the world! The classic online encyclopedia, run by readers like you. Everyone and his brother on the internet gets information from Wikipedia semi-regularly, and a lot of people edit it. There are very few topics and people not covered by this very comprehensive encyclopedia. Try it out! While the system may take a while to get used to, it is entertaining and enriching to edit on Wikipedia.

wikiHow

My wiki of choice, wikiHow is a how-to site that covers boundless topics in a neat and original how-to format. It is very enjoyable contributing, not to mention learning how to do something you may not have known before. This wiki covers everything from "How to French Kiss" to "How to Taste Chocolate" to "How to Sleep Comfortably on a Warm Night." While some articles may seem repetitive or obvious, this wiki is the most useful wiki that you will come across.

Uncyclopedia
This wiki is a parody site, satiring the famous Wikipedia. It is not useful in terms of information, but it can be very entertaining. This is a quite popular wiki, attracting many readers and editors. While you can't trust the information it provides, this is a site that you might want to pass on to coworkers who need a laugh. Be careful, though, as not every page is work safe.

Illogicopedia
The goofy, nonsensical wiki that is more entertaining to contribute to than to read. All of the pages on this wiki are complete nonsense, and they are proud about it. There are not many users, but this gives the community a tight-knit feel. Almost all articles are accepted, so long as they are not too obscene or random key-mashing. This is a fun, fun wiki, though the entertainment and educational value doesn't come near that of other wikis.

Wikia
This is not really a "wiki," but rather a network of wikis. They have wikis on a boatload of topics, and you can be sure to find one that interests you. There are wikis on Halo, Harry Potter, and a great many other topics. If you want a wiki on a topic that doesn't exsist, you can even suggest one! Most of the wikis are small, and many would be happy to gain a new user.

As you can see, the number of wikis out there are endless. A simple search can help you find others that I haven't named. You can find wikis on probably every subject that you can think of, and you can edit them all! So, have fun and keep wiki-ing!
