Gone are the long summer days but, despite the cold weather, there are still plenty of things for kids to do in the Middle Tennessee area during the winter. Whether you're in town visiting or you are a resident, there are fun winter events happening all around that you and your family won't want to miss this season, which are great for kids and adults alike.

58th Nashville Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting: Home for the Holidays

Kids of all ages love parades. This annual winter event and great holiday tradition is set to feature almost 60 balloons, floats, and participants. Gerry House of country radio's WSIX, who has announced plans to retire in mid-December, will be the host of this year's parade.

Nashville Ballet presents: Nashville's Nutcracker

Tchaikovsky's score for The Nutcracker is a favorite holiday tradition for lots of people and the Nashville Ballet has been performing the ballet in Nashville for many years. In 2008 they began production of Nashville's Nutcracker, a twist on the traditional tale. Featuring the same beloved Tchaikovsky music, this retelling is set in 1897 Nashville. It features beautiful new choreography and sets but has the same heart as the original. The story of a child's toys come to life, The Nutcracker is a wonderful way to get kids interested in the ballet, music, and theater.

Shrek: The Musical

Arriving in Nashville this January, and based on the twisted fairy tale movie "Shrek" by Dreamworks, this musical features 19 all new songs. This is sure to be a hit with the kids and parents will have lots of fun too. Seats for the show are likely to be limited as it is only being presented at TPAC for five days so be sure to buy your tickets sooner rather than later. Kids will love to see their favorite movie characters come to life.

Dragons and Fairies
This traveling exhibit is part of the Freeman Foundation Asian Initiative. After listening to centuries old folktales from Viet Nam, kids can experience them first hand through fun hands-on activities and games. This is a great way to introduce children and adults alike to both modern and traditional Asian culture. After exploring this exhibit, be sure to check out all of the other wonderful things that the Discovery Center has to offer.
