The Biased Nature of the Website "MyLot"

Rules and Guidelines Only Being Enforced on Certain Members

whitetigress
My husband and I have been members of the website Mylot for a little over four months. We have both enjoyed our time posting discussions and replying to other people's there, while making money in the process. We have been paid once and it was a nice amount of money for what we did to earn it. My husband and I have tried to be very diligent in our courtesy and accuracy in our discussions and responses. We don't try to be nasty or hateful, and we try to not participate in a manner that is offensive or accusing toward other members. We try to keep our "language" polite and refrain from any censored profanity, although it has occurred to a minimum extent on occasion.

I have not read word for word what the rules, policies and guidelines are at Mylot but I know enough that it is expected to contribute quality content and to be respectful of other users. In the past few weeks it has come to my attention that there are many people at Mylot who abuse the rules, policies and guidelines, yet they are constantly reporting other people for doing the same thing as they are. In some instances the person making the report is actually in worse violation than the person they are reporting. Most of the time the person who is abusing the system and reporting others seems to have a complex of themselves that they can do or say no wrong and that they deserve some kind of special attention and possibly even power. These people have a habit of badmouthing other members for basically no reason. Then when they are called on their abuse by the member, or by a "friend" of theirs, the person doing the badmouthing all of a sudden can't handle the criticism and the fact that they are being stood up against. This is when the reporting seems to begin. There have been entire discussions deemed deletable by Mylot's administration and also certain posts in some discussions. The problem is, the person who started the nastiness is usually left with their violating posts and discussions still intact.

There are a lot of people who are claiming that the administration at Mylot can't keep up with everything and everyone so they just make a judgment call at the time. Somehow it is coming across as hypocritical and biased. It is aggravating to have members at Mylot who think they are above the "law", and feel the necessity to use vulgar, abusive language toward other members. Then they feel it is their right to report other people who are not anywhere near as bad as they are, simply because they don't agree with that person's point of view, or they don't like being put in their place so to speak. In my opinion if the administration at Mylot can't keep up with everything and everyone, then they just need to throw out all of the "rules" and let everyone fend for themselves.

It might seem juvenile to go to a website on the internet and get into heated discussions about almost any topic, and to have people throw around accusations and insults that are only words on a screen, then have other people who feel the need to explain themselves, get retribution, and even defend themselves. Most people think it would be easier and more mature to simply ignore all of the nastiness and not even reply. Sometimes it's not that simple though. Granted it would be better to just report the abuse than to contribute to it, but as my point in this article is, the abuse seems to be allowed for some and others are punished.

I would hate to stop going to Mylot as it is a way to make money, and find out and share interesting information. I just don't know if I can be a part of something that is so biased. I feel they either need to come up with a system that helps stop all of the abuse and reporting, and make sure that no one is allowed their "say" more than someone else with whom there is a dispute with, or they should just abandon all of the "rules" and let it be a free for all forum where anyone can say anything and there will just be slander and fights.

Every forum has those that push the envelope, sort of speak, MyLot included. I can't say that I have made much money there but it is a good sounding board for other forums and articles.

Thank you for looking deeper, getting to know some of us, and attempting to clear the air.
We really have no "power" or "privilege" over there, our stuff gets deleted just like everyone else's and we must adhere to the same rules the other users follow. Most of us know the rules better than others because we have been forced to learn them, so we can defend ourselves from attacks by people who hate us simply because someone told them to.

In light of some recent events I wanted to express that this article was done out of a bad experience. I have since come to know the people who sparked my creation of this article. Although they may express themselves differently than a lot of other people, and some people think they are harsh, I believe that they are simply passionate in their feelings and beliefs. Although the rules at Mylot are still sub par in enforcement, that applies to many, many users from there, and not simply a certain group of people as I believed before. I apologize for any misleadings this article may have produced.

Sounds like some participants are immature and unpleasant, which absolutely needs to be addressed by administration. That sort of thing gives the site a bad reputation!

I agree with you on this and do not think it is fair that people act like they can just say what they want and shouldn't be punished but if someone else says something they don't like they want to jump and report them. I haven't been reported because I try to stay out of this stuff and don't like to argue with anyone on the site. I do think that Mylot needs to change their rules about people abusing the forum and getting by with it. I love Mylot and I'm not letting anyone push me away. Great article and it would be nice if Mylot would read this. :)

Dang, the end got cut off -- I was saying I really think myLot is a great community, but they seem to be going through some growing pains right now. Hopefully things will be smoother in the future.

I agree with the commenter before me. I really think the site overall is a high-quality, well run site. Unfortunately, there are always a few bad eggs... I do have two suggestions for you though:

    1. Familiarize yourself with the guidelines. You can find them here: http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx or by clicking on the "MyLot" tab that's at the top of most of the pages. This way, if you chose to report this behavior you'll have a leg to stand on.

    2. If there are specific myLotters who are causing you this trouble, send a message to the myLot admins. They are surprisingly responsive. I have even heard of a couple of occasions where posts that had been deleted were restored by myLot when they heard "the other side" of the story. I think it's important though to back up anything you send them with plenty of facts. Maybe links to the posts where this person was abusive, or something similar.

I really think myLot is a great community, but they seem to be going t

Being familiar with this site, I can personally attest to the content and accuracy of this article. That said, I must emphasize that Mylot is a quality site for the most part and it is simply the activity of certain members with God complexes who are making it a less than pleasant experience for some users. I would hope that quality posters, such as the author of this article do not abandon the site. People like this author, outnumber the powertrippers and eventually, it is my hope that they will be the ones to prevail over the abusers. Mylot administration certainly needs to re-examine and refine it's 'policing' policies. Of that there is no question.
Posters like this author are the ones that will make it happen. Together we stand, divided we fall - let's stand together and give at least one more corner of the internet back it's integrity.
