The Bible as History
Using Science, Archeology and External Writings to Examine the Historical Accuracy of the Bestselling Book of All Time
Whatever your beliefs, or your views on God and religion, it must be admitted that the Bible is without question the most influential book in the world. It has shaped the lives of individuals, families and in some cases even governments. The Bible was written over a course of more than 1,500 years and records an amazing amount of information. At one point or another most of us have asked, just how much of this information can be believed? How much of the Bible is historically accurate, and what constitutes proof of accuracy? Critics sometimes claim the persons of Moses, Abraham, David, Joseph and even Jesus were all mythical creations meant to be ideas and representations of an idea, but were not actual people. Do the claims of these critics hold up when examined historically?
In his new book Kevin McKinney looks at"The Bible as History" and uses scientific data, archeological findings and external sources in an attempt to discover just how historically accurate the Bible truly is. McKinney keeps the book moving at a good pace, provided large amounts of information and facts without overburdening the reader with unnecessary detail or repetition.
McKinney compares the Bible with external documents to confirm events and places mentioned in the Bible. He lists the top ten archeological discoveries associated with the Bible, and looks at the scientific data concerning the parting of the Red Sea, the Plagues of Egypt, Crucifixion, and both Modern Day and Biblical Miracles.
One of the more enjoyable aspects of this book is that while McKinney's personal beliefs are somewhat evident, he examines both sides of the argument. When material is used which is considered questionable by some scholars, McKinney makes notes of this and explains why the data is considered suspect or unreliable by some.
There is an entire section on false information being provided by both sides of the argument. Examples of scientist intentionally falsifying information for personal gain and profit. A want to be archeologist making false or exaggerated claims of discovery in order to gain a following among Christian fundamentalist. Throughout the text McKinney points out inconsistencies and problems with both camps.
The Bible as History earns a solid 4 1/2 of 5 stars.
